Just to try and get some fresh sense into the Cityfox discussion, thought I'd create a thread where we can discuss the bus business, rather than the taxi business so much.

If Rhys/Phil or anyone else can confirm - what is the new night service they have planned and will there be any day services running?

Sorry to say I have nothing very exciting to report.

Yes we have been looking at night bus opportunities. However (as advised by one of our detractors on the other thread!) we are anxious to focus on one thing at once and there is lots going on with the taxis in Bristol so we have decided not to progress the night buses for the time being.

There are therefore no current or planned PSV operations, so it's all a bit boring really! No doubt when that changes we'll keep you informed.

Have you still got the Scania? Have you or are you planning on getting any other vehicles yet?

I think there are chances to be had and actually bus wise. Running taxis, might tell you where there is demand for a night bus, so might be interesting.

So they advertised for a night bus driver a few weeks ago, but know they want to focus on one thing at a time ?

Apparently so but it's clearly still in a muddle as CityFox Bus has a fleet size of 7, and 10 employees, according to one of the other CityFox websites and it also lists various existing work and contracts. Hardly consistent with "no current or planned PSV operations".

I really would take what it says on the website with a pinch of salt.

Happy to answer questions, I just worry that this thread is about to descend into a familiar pattern in which we state the correct and current position, some of you guys dig around on the internet and find things which contradict what we've said and then reveal this triumphantly as evidence of our incompetence (or worse, deliberately making stuff up). I can tell you it gets very boring and that's not a pattern I can be bothered to engage with.

So, just to be clear about the facts, which you can take as superseding any information as reading elsewhere:

The Group has an operators licence in Wales but no current PSV Operations, andnone specifically planned at the present time. There was a move towards commercial night bus operation which was linked to the likely availability of some day time work. This didn't subsequently materialise so we've put the night bus on hold because the licensing and financial implications of running such an operation on a standalone basis don't really stack up at the moment. That doesn't mean we won't return to the idea in the future, and everything can change with one phone call - opportunities come and go all the time. So I don't offer any warranty that this information will remain true for any specific period of time!

The Group currently has one bus in its possession - the Omnicity - but this is not currently licensed and therefore not in use. Again, that could change in minutes if the right opportunity comes along.

And just for clarity, we have taxi operations in Bristol and (indirectly, for the moment at least) in Bath. We do not currently have taxi operations in Plymouth but again that could change in a heartbeat.

So I'm sorry if people think that's a muddle but I think it's fairly clear.

I do accept that the Group website could do with some updating, but Taxi and Bus look pretty clear and up to date to me. I'm sure the Group site is on Rhys's radar but there is a huge amount going on at the moment and it's probably not his priority. The inaccuracies are not such that they could actually cause anyone any harm or damage (no out of date timetables for example) and I would respectfully suggest that you could go to most transport company websites and find details that are out of date and haven't kept pace with real life.

Do also bear in mind that the Group is not actually accountable to members of an Internet forum, but to its customers, shareholders (i.e. Rhys) and the regulatory authorities, all of whom can expect to receive unhindered access to any information or service they need to enable us to fulfil our obligations to them.

It's not even accountable to me. My varied work life means that I don't get to spend a lot of time in Bristol, so it would not be appropriate for me to hold any specific operational responsibilities - I'm not even a director or shareholder of the Group, my formal involvement only with the parts of the Group that look after the financial/administrative/property functions, for particular reasons that are private. But I'm always happy to represent the Group to the best of my knowledge.

The point I'm making there is simply that while a majority of contributors to this forum are sensible, knowledgeable people with whom we're always happy to engage, please do not take offence if we're reluctant to respond to posters who seem to be on a mission to find things wrong.

As I said on the other thread, always happy to buy anyone a pint!

I hope that doesn't come across as a muddle, apologies if so!

I forgot to mention, specifically on the discussion about night buses, our view is that there are good synergies between buses and taxis, so while there might be times and places where they compete, there are also great opportunities for integration. On a strategic level, I believe that the wider market is much less mode-conscious than it used to be, and in the future people will mix and match whichever modes of transport work best for their particular journey, so the ability to offer a combination of both is something that we feel could work to our advantage if and when we make the decision to go ahead.

Going a bit OT, in Germany it's common that you can use a night bus to the nearest stop to home, then the night bus driver can call you a taxi to meet the bus at that stop and take you the rest of the way. Hamburg has offered this since the 1990s.

Yes, that's just the kind of thing that we think could work.

Such things have been tried in different places in the past without proving to be financially viable, but modern app technology could well make things possible that previously weren't.

I never really thought about it like that, but yeah sounds good to me.

The kind of use-case with modern technology would be you're walking out of a club, get your phone out, and in one press find the nearest night bus, and book a guaranteed seat and connecting taxi on it for a medium-distance journey. Given the costs of a night out, I'm not sure that someone would bother if the taxi or Uber fare all the way home would be 10-20 quid as that's just easier - the sort of thing where it might work would be (sorry, I don't know Bristol) something like a medium-distance night bus from Manchester to Wigan with taxis connecting in places like Leigh and Wigan itself.

I suppose you could do it another way too, say you are out with a friend, you both come out of a club in say Manchester and board the night bus to a central point in Wigan which is a couple of miles from your house and 4 or 5 miles the other way from your friend's house, when you get off the bus, there are two taxis waiting one for you and one for your friend, that way you both get taxi's direct, you have been able to talk to your friend on the bus and then you can go your own seperate ways without one of you having to stay in the taxi for what could be classed as a dead journey to their place before double backing to yours.

It could work in theory and as proved already does in Germany.

I think both of those are very plausible scenarios but I do agree that such a scenario works if the distance to be travelled is far enough that it would cost too much to take a taxi all the way.

So looking at this as a new outsider reading the comments by Phil Stockley.........
theres a bus operation which has onr unlicensed bus and no routes
a taxi operation in Plymouth with no taxis
a taxi operation in Bath with a fleet that the company don't control or manage (or presumably earn revenue from)
and a taxi operation in Bristol. So how big is that fleet?

again, as an outsider looking in, it looks a shambles

Splendour (sounds like a sugar substitute) have been posting on social media to promote group travel and airport transfers. Oh and introducing CubCard http://www.cityfoxtaxi.com/cubcard (A registered trademark symbol is shown).

Splendour's Facebook also has some new drawings of full size and mini Coaches.

Are these new drawings of their North Wales vehicles?

The Cubcard I note is valid on Snownonia Travel according to the Terms & Conditions.

It is not in fact a registered trademark; I just checked.

I have a feeling a certain large supermarket, and possibly also a large sandwich franchisor, is likely to object to any such registration.

Call it "FoxCard" or something and it'd be fine though.

I assume there is no bus services just yet? Couldnt find anything on the website, no timetables or anything, I tried to look as I saw in thr recent PSV Circle news that CityFox has some Dennis Dart SLF's, I'd love a ride on one or more!

Would you lease them out for private hire by any chance?

We know from Phil's post that they only have the Omnicity, and they've dropped the plan to make operate bus services to focus on their taxis.

"As an aside, this is probably as good a time as any to acknowledge that the recent drama over the Plymouth brand did find a legitimate weakness, and subsequent conversations between the two businesses have confirmed that the agreement that previously existed is no more. The Plymouth brand will therefore progressively be removed from publicity for the time being, although discussions are already underway with other interested parties in the area."
