I caught a train from Great Portland Street towards Paddington this evening at around 630. The train and PIS both said Hammersmith. After leaving Baker St the displays changed to say it was a Circle Line train via High St Kensington, which caused a lot of confusion at Edgware Road. There was a few minutes delay there, after which the driver announced the train was going to Hammersmith

How does that happen? Is that a bug in the system or would the control room have needed to change the destination both times?

2000 to 2012, I regularly travelled the Circle and H&C. I recall some trains ran a "lassoo" circuit --
starting at Hammersmith,
- at Edgware Rd, becoming Circle Line Outer Rail (clockwise) back to Edgware Road.
And ditto the reverse.

I also remember a couple of occasions where, to regulate the service (possibly due to a Circle Line unit being taken out of use) seeing a H&C service get reassigned to be a Circle Line one.

Isn't that just a standard Circle line service?

I have been on the occasional Circle line service that has actually run a circle, travelling Euston - Edgeware Rd - High St Ken.

It is now - but until December 2009 the Circle line operated as a continuous Circle, with the current Hammersmith section being exclusively Hammersmith & City line trains
