Can someone tell us what work is being undertaken in this closure period on this section? There was something on the news which implied a new flyover was being commissioned, but wasn't clear about where that was exactly. I've had a search about but haven't been able find anything.

It's a diveunder rather then a flyover, between Acton Main Line and Ealing Broadway.
It's to get freight trains to/from the Acton yard without blocking the Relief Lines.
Being commissioned at the moment.

There are also many other bits and pieces associated with Crossrail, plus extending and upgrading the 1990s electrification into Paddington station.

More specifically, it is to get freight out of Acton without blocking the Up Relief. The flyover being commissioned is at Airport Jn.

This freight diveunder could be of great long term term use for passenger trains. It allows trains from Clapham junction via the West London line, & Stratford via the North London line to get to Heathrow without needing an inch of new track & without any conflicting moves on the great western or crossrail lines.

Just for clarity, it's a passenger diveunder, going underneath the freight lines. Not sure how much value that will add in practice, going slow line through 5 stations which will be packed with crossrail traffic would be a fairly painful process, and most nll destinations at least would be better served by a change onto crossrail.

Bit of help here please, I've not noticed what's happened there. Didn't trains used to be able to come down the bank from Acton Welles Junction and go into the yard without touching the up relief line? Were the freight lines taken out at sometime in the past?

No, that move will still be possible and is (effectively) unchanged.

The dive-under is to allow trains to depart Acton Yard towards the Reading direction without conflicting with Up Relief Line services towards Paddington / Crossrail, which are sent via the dive-under.

Up Relief passenger services will, I believe, still have an option of taking the 'flat' route when there is no conflicting freight service, as this will be very slightly faster than dropping via the dive-under.

The physical arrangement of the flyover also happens to mean that freights into the yard from the Reading direction will also 'fly over' the Up Relief dive under, but in operational terms this is no different to today.

Good luck. The 'plain line' capacity of the Relief Lines from Ealing to Hayes will be very, very highly utilised nice Crossrail is up and running.

The existing diesel local services could use the dive-under even if the electrification is incomplete. Are they doing so ?

Ah, thanks for that. I was confused - it don't take much - after reading the N.R. release which I interpreted as trains entering and leaving at the Paddington end.

The Relief lines do not reopen until 3 January, when the new layout becomes fully signalled.
I expect the local wiring will be complete by then.
