Go North East and Stagecoach Newcastle both ran some services on Boxing Day, on a reduced Sunday timetable. Arriva in the North East appear to have run nothing.

TrentBarton have no service on Christmas and New Years day. Boxing Day was a Sunday service with less busier routes not operated. Nightbus on NY eve.
Nottingham City Transport operated no service on christmas and NY day. The more busier services operate boxing day and NY Eve. All but the Uni Nightroute will operate NY eve.

Southern Vectis runs buses on Christmas Day but not all. No buses on Christmas Day here in Bristol but we do have boxing day services on some route. Last journey is about 6:30/7pm.

Arriva Durham County has not operated anything on either December 25 or 26. Arriva Northumbria ran a limited service from Newcastle on December 26 only on services 43, 52, 308, X10, X11, X16, X21 & X22. There is no announcement on Arriva's website but it is shown on the relevant online timetable. As far as I am aware the only service operating in the North East on New Year's Day will be Go-Ahead's Park & Ride X50 as Newcastle United is playing at home.
Lothian, Lothian Country and East Coast Buses are all operating limited services on all three days.

Surprisingly first in weymouth are going to run a 30 min service on some routes on New year eve night until 3am.

One thing I don't get is that my local company trentbarton can run a Sunday service on most routes during the day while arriva in Derby are not running anything but it looks like arriva are not running in most places.

The only day I don't have a bus service is New Year's Day. When I can look across the valley to see the trains running to a normal weekday timetable but with no buses.

I live in Keighley which sees 3 routes run by volunteers (one cross town). This is the 25th year it's run.

On Boxing Day main routes see a half hourly service throughout West Yorkshire. I get an hourly service which only runs a quarter of its normal route (it normally runs half it's route in North Yorkshire). Unusually this year I could have caught both buses and trains today.

On New Year's Day I have nothing. There's only 1 route in West Yorkshire that runs (linking Leeds with Leeds Bradford Airport). The usual services from the Airport to Bradford, Harrogate and Keighley do not run.

Lothian Buses and its subsidiaries run a skeleton service on the 25th, and then a more comprehensive service on the 26th. They then run a more limited service on New Years Day, but not as limited as the 25th.

That means my service on these days is as follows:
25th December
- 1bph from approx 12-8pm
26th December
- 1bph from approx 7.30am-10pm
1st January
- 1bph from approx 10am-10pm

My normal service is approximately 2bph 6am-10pm then hourly to midnight Mon-Sat. And 1bph 7am-midnight on a Sunday.

It is usual for there to be a Sunday service on 25, 26 December and 1 January although some places have a reduced service in the evening on 24 December. There are a few exceptions, such as the UK and Ireland and a few towns in Finland. The Netherlands is unusual in having an early shutdown on 31 December which causes some issues with travel to/from neighbouring countries.

Whilst not 'busy', there were a handful of takers on the ones I saw between Aldershot and Farnborough, and waiting at stops through North Camp, at around 1545ish.

TfL - Christmas Day?! We should be so lucky - buses and Underground close down for the 25th. There used to be at least a skeleton service on Christmas Day, years back; I used to use it to get across London on the morning of the 25th to visit relatives. But that disappeared - at a guess - 40+ years ago. To be fair (difficult with TfL), Boxing Day services were also run down to a low level, but in more recent years have bounced back again.

The main other [ie besides lack of service on the 25th] problem with TfL at this time of year is that they no long provide a potted guide to the services. Until the last few years there was always a little leaflet/booklet available from tube stations etc, covering the whole Xmas/NY period, with general summaries of things like what time Christmas Eve services were run down, which parts of the system ran approximately a Saturday service on the 26th, and which were a Bank Holiday service, and things like that. It meant that people reliant on public transport had a convenient overview of what to expect, and could be prepared when out and about. But that was far too helpful to ordinary folks for the current TfL regime to supply it any more...

Here in Carlisle a special Boxing Day service, very much like the Sunday service but with earlier starting and finishing times was provided by Stagecoach in the city, with services out of the city to Penrith & Center Parcs, Brampton, Whitehaven & Annan. There was a special service on some routes in West Cumbria and on the 78 (Keswick - Seatoller) and the X5 (Workington - Penrith)

A normal Sunday service was operated from Kendal depot, so there were quite a few buses out in the Lake District.

The only Stagecoach service in the area on New Years Day is the 599 (Bowness to Grasmere) running hourly with a bit of a gap for lunch!

Mate of mine drives for TFL, his garage has more buses than will fit in it if they are all off the road so on Christmas day they have to hire somewhere to keep the extra buses.

As a matter of interest, why did you wish to exclude TfL services from the thread? For airports I can imagine it really depends on flight schedules so provision would vary from one to another.
But London patterns over the Christmas and New Year period are surely equally valid as other areas. It's just another city after all.

Maybe he assumed that TfL were running throughout the period. That is largely the case but with the strange anomaly of running no service on Christmas Day.

Must be quite unique because it's difficult to imagine a place in the Edinburgh area that receives a 25 December service but only has one bus per hour on 26 December. Unless you're in West or East Lothian, in which case it's really the councils that negotiate the routes/frequency and pay operators to run the buses rather than the 'generosity' of Lothian themselves.

For Edinburgh, yes. And Midlothian isn't too shoddy on 26 December or 1 January. But for West and East Lothian the company (and its subsidiaries) may not provide anything commercially if it wasn't for council funding.

The only day I don't have a bus service is New Year's Day. When I can look across the valley to see the trains running to a normal weekday timetable but with no buses.

On Christmas Day there was also the X51 (operated by Black Prince) that ran from Morley to both Leeds General Infirmary and St. James Hospitals. Black Prince will also operate the free 87 on New Years Day between Morley and the White Rose Centre.

As for Boxing Day, most of the main routes operated a 30 minute service but the 51/52 between Moor Allerton and Morley ran every 20 minutes and the 72 was every 15 minutes, certain routes especially the 233, the X98, the 508 and CityZap was hourly. Rodger Batley once again provided his H11 between Scholes and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary with permission of Stotts Coaches, this is one of the original West Yorkshire Boxing Day services prior to the 2007 introduction of the West Yorkshire wide services.

For the first time the PR2 also operated on Boxing Day.

In Devon, Stagecoach and Plymouth CityBus pack up early on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve with last buses generally around 20.00. No service on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Stagecoach operates limited services between 09.00 and 18.00 on Boxing Day on a few selected routes:

Falcon (the Plymouth-Bristol coach service) is different, as it has a limited service on Boxing Day and runs a full Saturday/Sunday timetable throughout New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.

Reading Buses finishes early on Christmas Eve, on most routes last buses are around 20.00 but routes 5, 6, 17, 21 and 26 have a limited service until around 23.00 - coincidentally these are the five routes that usually have 24-hour service.

No services Christmas Day.

On Boxing Day, services that normally have a Sunday service operate, usually only between 09.00 and 18.00.

24-hour routes recommence around 04.00 on Friday 27th.

A full Saturday service operates on New Year's Eve, including 24-hour service on routes 5, 6, 17, 21 and 26 - route 17 has an enhanced 15-minute frequency until 03.00 and route 21 operates half-hourly until 03.00.

A full Sunday service operates on New Year's Day. Route 17 has the enhanced public holiday service between 06.30 and 10.00 with buses every 20 minutes between 07.00 and 09.00 then up to every 10 minutes.

I see from this thread that in the North services on New Years Eve still finish early and they are sparse if any the next day - similar to when I lived there 50 years ago.
In London there are enhanced services to meet the demand - is this due to different culture of passengers?

Here in Swindon you can get a bus to the railway station on boxing day but no trains. Meanwhile on New Years Day there is a train service but no buses to the station. This country really doesn't have a clue when it comes to public transport provision at Christmas/New Year.

I quite agree with you, in our little family and friends group I try to help out with bus and train info, especially at holiday times with maybe work or hospital visiting, all the normal stuff. Because I live in rural Leicestershire makes no odds, that as you say Busaholic, I might want details of holiday times all over the place, plus my own hobby interest and not everyone is good with timetables or especially holiday time alterations, so only wanting my location on a website is of no use!!!

East Yorkshire ran buses on Boxing Day, an increased service on previous years and from what I have heard the services were well used.
