I want to go from Christchurch to Crewe (actually Winsford, but Crewe is one stop away and I'm sure makes it easier) on March 6, then on to Newcastle on March 9 and return from there to Christchurch on March 11. The journey on March 11 will be late in the day so has to be via London.

So, the question for you ticketing and routing experts is: what is the cheapest way of doing this?

I think Crewe is a valid route, so a return from Christchurch to Newcastle via London would do it - but am I allowed to break the outward journey for several days?

A Christchurch to Newcastle Off Peak Return +Any permitted is valid for break of journey in both directions.

Yes, but the outward portion is valid for one day only. You can break journey overnight but you must stay within the validity of the ticket...

You'd only be able to do this on an Anytime Return (5 days outward validity), not an Off Peak (1 day). An Anytime won't be the cheapest way so you'll need several tickets.

Without checking, I don't think Crewe is on a Permitted Route (not via London at least). A ticket to Scotland would be though.

The cheapest way to do this would no doubt be a series of Advances.
