So Adonis has put Chris Green in charge of getting the UK's stations up to scratch. It is about time someone took the TOC's and Network Rail to hand for the way our stations are looked after and for the services provided on them.
My questions are varied and comments are welcomed.
Firstly where should Chris Green start? Should he start with the most needy cases first and push through immediate work. Or maybe he should compile a list of minimum standards that stations seeing a certain usage should have to adhere to. What recent redevelopments/openings have not addressedthe problems prevalent before the work was done. Also although the focus will be on big stations there will be smaller stations that also need work. What should be the minimum requirements for a staffed station and should staff be seen as intrinsic to the station environment. Are there any unstaffed stations which do the job and can act as templates for smaller stations/halts. He can maybe start with Wakefield Kirkgate and Man Vic. Another interesting point might be is there a North-South split in station conditions. I would not be surprised to find the majority of problems is to be found in the North rather than the more affluent South.
Whilst Adonis is at it why doesnt look at appointing a re-openings guru to coordinate attempts at getting lines and stations re-opened. It seems to me that Adonis' ALR trip was effective as he saw first hand the problems out there. To get things done he needs foot soldiers in the trenches who are accountable for specific issues. Otherwise problems just get lost in the red tape of todays intricate system.
