Hello,

Some contradicting information I cannot understand, looking at Chippenham to Milton Keynes Central (MKC) via London 1st class return on Tuesday 30th December, not definite journey so not looking at advances (and in any case an advance puts me on a 350 out of Euston when I'd prefer the slightly later 390 journey and arrive at MKC 5 minutes earlier)

£251 1st Off-Peak Return is offered on National Rail Journey Planner on 07:56 Chippenham to Paddington, tube then Euston to MKC, checking ticket is definitely not LM only, I see this is ticket restriction LC which includes:

Not valid for travel on trains timed to depart earlier than shown from the following stations:

  • 08:46 from Chippenham

So I just double check and look up this same journey but as a single on same National Rail Journey Planner. 07:56 Chippenham to MKC 1st class is now only available as an Anytime Single...but return is still offering an Off-Peak Return despite the departure time from Chippenham being earlier than the time restriction at Chippenham...so in theory this ticket isn't valid?

As with many other long-distance TOCs, GWR ease their time restrictions around the Christmas/New Year period as there are far fewer business travellers and commuters. Therefore restriction code LC only applies until 19 December 2025 and then again from 5 January 2026. You're travelling on 30 December - during the unrestricted period - so most GWR-priced Off-Peak tickets are valid all day.

There isn't an Off-Peak first class single from Chippenham to Milton Keynes - only an Anytime single. That's why you aren't being offered an Off-Peak fare when you make a one-way search.

Therefore, the ticket is entirely valid. But even if a mistake had been made, you are always entitled to rely on NRE, or what a journey planner offers you when buy your ticket.

Ahhh! That explains that thank you very much!! Wondered if it was an error or something as I say it didn't add up, thanks for the clarification!

Out if interested if something like that came up as an error like on a normal weekday, then I assume printing the suggested schedule from National Rail site itself would avoid a penalty fare if such an unusual scenario occurred?

It would mean you are travelling with a valid ticket. Moreover, even if you travel with an Off-Peak ticket at a time when it is not valid, the correct outcome is to have to pay the difference to the cheapest valid fare - not a Penalty Fare.

Of course none of us can guarantee that staff would honour the ticket or alternatively follow the correct procedure - there is little to no staff training on this sort of topic - but an appeal should be successful in either case.
