Chiltern's Boxing Day service

I used to absolutely love working boxing day. It seems such a sacred day to many and for this reason the extra benefts offered for working what has always seemed to me to be just another day were simply too good to turn down. Did every single one in a row for years

Did you have a choice to work? It is the choice that is the issue here I believe.

It might not be called 'Boxing Day,' but December 26th is a public holiday in Germany.

However you are right that in many localities in Europe, December 26th is not usually regarded as a public holiday.

When researching this topic for a National policy rail maker some years ago - we discovered that Boxing Day is one of the busiest on the calender in Germany for the reason that Xmas Eve is the biggest element of the holiday over there. Loadings on long distance services go off the graph - hence DB's efforts to run full service+ on those days. ..

Different countries , differing norms.

TBF - when Thameslink were able to run on Boxing Day - way back - they carried respectable loads , not just airport traffic either. Eng ops has somewhat cramped style in the last few years , for good reasons I have to say.

Its good that they are having a trial, however I've only just realised that its only up to Bicester North.

I'm looking to travel from London to Shrewsbury on Boxing day, and had planned to take a Chiltern service to Birmingham/Kidderminster. From there catch a lift.

Plans are now in smoke, any suggestions?

National Express operate a full timetable, I think. I was once told that Boxing Day is their busiest day of the year, so best to book in advance.

National Express operate a full timetable, I think. I was once told that Boxing Day is their busiest day of the year, so best to book in advance.

National Express operate a reduced timetable - e.g. Leeds to London operates about half the frequency of a normal day.

This is much improved from 20 years ago when they only operated a couple of services a day on major routes.
