I was very surprised to be required to present the payment card used to purchase the ticket when collecting a pre-booked ticket at Kenilworth today. The ticket was bought directly from Chiltern Railways, which I ususally don't use for ticket purchases. I know that confirmation emails always state something along the lines of "Remember to bring the card you paid on", but I've never seen this enforced previously.
Is this something that Chiltern Railways do? Or must this have been a glitch?
I also collected a ticket booked via Avanti from the same machine - this collection process accepted a card not used to purchase the ticket.

It's the retailer, not the operator of the machine you're collecting from, which determines this. When writing the record of the ticket to the industry system used to manage collections, they decide whether to include a flag for 'Any Card Collection'. The majority of retailers nowadays do set this, but there are still a few (Chiltern are seemingly one) that don't.
