I feel there should be a national modular design for a new unit with a battery EMU that can be charged from OLE and/or an onboard generator. This could be ordered by Northern, GWR and Chiltern, along with the possibility of being ordered by ScotRail.

Give or take the odd Stadlers the 80x has become a standard flexible InterCity unit, with most long distance TOCs having at least some, and being suitable for wires or no. It is odd that there isn't a regional equivalent.

you dont want a fully unified fleet to avoid issues like the 80X cracking issues from leading to paralysis
80x for intercity and FLIRT for regional and Aventra for inner-city makes a good mix

There is a regional equivalent, in the form of the AT200. Though the only UK examples are the ScotRail Class 385s, with no D(E)MU or bi-mode at present.

Was it not Class 170s and now CAF 19x. I must raise a hand to say I'm not a Stadler fan as I believe they are overly complicated and inefficient for the amount of passengers they carry. How much horse power does a 755 need?

Would be great but the Dft probably has no interest, money
