Thanks, so presumably the country end is already widened for the few trains that are still using the bay? Was that done quite a while ago?
The country end of the platform tapers, the original track crossing Castle Mill Stream remained but a new set of points were installed to route into the new Platform 1, the existing track which went into the parcel dock was lifted shortly after the two parcel vans were removed and the dock canopy removed.
The bridge across Castle Mill Stream is too narrow to be double tracked so the original alignment remained and the new alignments are directly after the points which feed P1 and P2 if that makes sense.

Country end of the platform? Are you suggesting there's no country between Oxford and London?

Get a life and stop being pedantic, you and I guess most reading this thread know exactly what I mean :roll::roll::roll:

No need to get narky. It's not a term I've heard before. I can see it being applied to Croydon (in London I know), or Staines, or even Watford. But at what point does London/Country stop being applied? Birmingham? Leeds?

I've seen it several times in magazines like Modern Railways and Rail. Presumably, so long as a line has an Up direction towards London and a Down direction away from London, the "country end" terminology is still applicable, so on the ECML you could use it near Edinburgh!

Assuming everything goes to plan, it looks like this will be the first Chiltern Driver training run between Oxford Parkway and Oxford tomorrow morning.

I'd love to know then, which is the 'country' or 'London' end at Exeter St Davids. Same was once upon a time at North Road.

I think it is a commuter term, never used down here in Devon. :D

The same could be said for Westbury having GWR services coming in one way and SWT the other.

RTT has been showing Chiltern moves via all of P1, P2 and P3, so have they put some track down very recently, like over the recent weekend?

A post elsewhere suggests that some track was laid into platform 1 over the weekend, with today's moves suggesting they put down at least enough to accommodate a two-car dmu. So far as I know, platform 2 has remained operational throughout the work, though it has been truncated at the south end for some months now, with a temporary set of buffers in place.

I will try to see what's going on when I pass through Oxford in the morning.

That is correct Sir, as I am based at Oxford, I am pretty much keeping up to date with all the work. Some of the Banbury Shuttles go from P2 at the moment, but with Chiltern sending a Route Learning train every 5 minutes, it seems like they couldn't wait till December! Construction work of the extended P2 is currently underway with P1 soon to follow, with track already in place and the new buffers at the end allocated.

The text of the NR Press Release.

Latest segment of Britain’s Railway Upgrade Plan - delivered on time and on budget
Scheme conceived by Chiltern Railways based on its customers’ wishes - then delivered by Network Rail
Historic: first new rail link between London and a major city for more than 100 years

Chiltern Railways has begun the final countdown to the launch of its historic new train service between central Oxford and London Marylebone - after Network Rail engineers finished their latest railway upgrade on time and on budget.

A new section of track between the old Oxford station, in the city centre, and the new Oxford Parkway station, on the outskirts, was completed at 2.37am yesterday (Mon 21 Nov).

With the new infrastructure now successfully commissioned, Chiltern’s direct connection between central Oxford and London is almost a reality.

Chiltern Railways will launch its new service - two fast trains an hour to and fro - on Monday 12 December.

On that day history will be made: this is the first new rail link between London and major British city for more than 100 years.

Train passengers will then have two ways to get to London - via Bicester into London Marylebone or on the existing route via Reading into London Paddington.

This is the latest service improvement for customers resulting from Britain’s Railway Upgrade Plan.

It was made possible by a £320m joint investment by Network Rail and Chiltern Railways.

Chiltern conceived the plan for the new route based on what its customers wanted.

They later teamed up with Network Rail, who brought the infrastructure skills and experience needed to ensure the scheme was delivered on time and on budget.

Martin Frobisher, route managing director for Network Rail's London North Western route, said: "This paves the way for our partners Chiltern Railways to launch their new central Oxford-to-London Marylebone services in December.

"This railway upgrade will boost business and create exciting new opportunities for people in the Oxford region."

Dave Penney, managing director of Chiltern Railways, said: “Over 10 years in the making, this is a major milestone for both Network Rail and Chiltern Railways with less than a month to go before the launch of services from Oxford city centre.

“The current service from Oxford Parkway has been phenomenally successful with over 1.5 million passengers using the line to date. The completion of the historic project allows provides an alternative route to London for over 100,000 people and reopens a key commuting line between the growing town of Bicester and Oxford.”

As well as new services for customers, the project has also seen new stations built, Oxford Parkway and Bicester Village.

In December 2015 a new service between Oxford Parkway and London Marylebone was launched. A new station on the outskirts of the city, Oxford Parkway is designed to be attractive to motorists who want easy access to the railway. Immediately adjacent to the congested A34, it is close to the A40 and A44 trunk roads and has 1,500 car parking spaces on site.

That's what we've been discussing for the last few pages of this thread.

Given how busy the car park is, how long will it be before it has to be double-decked like so many other Chiltern Stations?

Further to my post last night, responding to swt_passenger's question about platform 1, had a look this morning as my train rolled into Oxford.

There is enough track in platform 1, adjacent to the north end of the platform that was built earlier in the year, to take a three-car set by the look of it. The unit in use on the route learners today was a two-car 168, so no problems shunting in and out of both the bays.

As noted above, work to lengthen (at the station building end) and raise the height of platform 2 is well in hand, as well as work to build the south end of platform 1.

The old GWR canopy between platform 2 and platform 3 is now partly dismantled.

Also sound barriers are being fitted along the east side of the formation around Oxford North junction, adjacent to the Waterways estate.

I wasn't able to get to see the first of the Chiltern driver training runs from Oxford Parkway to Oxford/Hinksey Reception Lines, which started running from Monday 21st November.

I did manage a quick visit today, 23rd November, when two units, 168 321 and 168 324 were in use. At the moment, all trains are using the up line, the down line has a temporary stopblock just south of the crossover at Woodstock Road Junction, south of Oxford Parkway.

A few photos on my site, starting with this one:

Thanks for taking the trouble to confirm the latest state of play.

The structures of Platforms 1 and 2 were completed this evening, with back-filling of Platform 1 continuing, ready for final tarmacing next week. The tracks are laid and the buffer-stops are in place, but just need attaching. Thanks to the Stakhanovite efforts of the 24-hour Orange Army all seems set for completion in good time for a few days' dummy-running before the public service starts on 12 Dec.

Network Rail has sent out a leaflet to local Bicester residents in the last week or so (it has also been published in the local press - as a 4 page/1 sheet front page outer cover to e.g. the Bicester Advertiser.

In announcing the new rail link to Oxford, two trains every hour from Bicester Village station to Oxford Parkway and Oxford they say journey times will be from 13 minutes as opposed to 28 minutes before the upgrade. First train to Oxford is now at 05:42 and the last train to Bicester leaving Oxford at 23:15.

Also there is no need to change at Oxford Parkway to catch the 500 Park & Ride bus.

But I was wondering what would happen to the bus from 11 December (technically every other bus is a rail replacement currently). Rather than bus service being reduced it is being extended to Kidlington and Woodstock. It will still serve Oxford station and it looks as if all buses will also serve both Oxford Parkway station and the Park & Ride terminal building.

Not all buses will go to Kidlington and Woodstock (also serving Blenheim Palace) - service frequency is every 30 minutes. Extra buses run between Oxford station and Oxford Parkway to maintain the same 15 minute frequency during the day and early evening. It looks to be more or less the same timetable 7 days a week.

All in all it will be great for Bicester, Woodstock and Kidlington residents. And Oxford Parkway is rapidly developing into quite a transport hub now.

A visit to Oxford this afternoon revealed both Platforms 1 and 2 virtually completed with nearly all areas tarmaced and fencing and lighting almost finished, or a least they will be ready enough to run trains. It appears that the inaugural service will be Sunday morning's 1Y03 07:43 departure to Marylebone followed by a day of "dummy" running before the official launch on Monday morning.

With the annual station usage estimates having been published yesterday, it's time to do some comparisons. In each case, the figures are the combined entries and exits figure for 2015/16, and the figure in brackets is that for 2014/15:

  • Bicester North: 1,416,600 (1,696,402)
  • Bicester Town/Village: 413,432 (88,440)
  • Islip: 10,482 (6,858)
  • Oxford: 6,564,678 (6,624,954)
  • Oxford Parkway: 274,696 (N/A)
