I have noticed that on the Chiltern plug door mk3 stock, the guard always operates the doors from the driving van trailer door.
do they not have CDL panels at each door like on normal mk3s? is the guard only trained to use the DVT door?

I stand for correction on this, but I'd hazard a guess that there was no "local" door provision made when the Chiltern Mk3s were converted to power door operation, thus the Guard needs to work from the DVT (which still has it's inward opening slam door) to be able to carry out the train safety check once the other doors have closed.

I've seen Chiltern guards release the doors from half way up the train at Banbury before. Said guard asked the impatient man behind him to wait while he checked all the train was in the platform after operating the local door switch. The man ignored him and tried to alight with the guard. Needless to say the guard wasn't so polite on telling him a second time!

If the guard is carrying out the dispatch procedure from a local door rather than from the DVT the process is no different from dispatching a EMU that is only fitted with power doors like a 444/450. Guard closes all the doors bar his local door, after the doors are closed he carries out his train safety check, closes the local door and ding ding. Guard stays by the local door until the train has left the platform.

On a 450/444? Yes, on a Chiltern Mk3? I do not know. But as I understand it each door in the coach is meant to have it's own GOP (Guards Operating Panel).

as the door system is off a 444, and mk3s had one at each door, then they probably do have the equipment for the guard to do the doors from any door, and to the train safety check.

Just because they used the door system off a 444 doesnt mean they used the same control panels!

Could be dependant on where they start the train from.. and then where they may venture through the train... Given the office is in the DVT (?).

Similarly when working a 313 I tend to start from the rear cab then maybe venture to the Middle Panel.

So are we sure that they can do it from any door?

I didn't know 313s had a panel in the middle though.

Southern 313's have one fitted.. Its a basic affair but it closes the doors and rings the bell... even has a PA system that works sometimes.
