They're not due back from Doncaster until the spring.

OK thanks for that, do you know if there is any plans to increase the amount of loco hauled sets in the future, or is there enough spare MK,3,s knocking around.

I'm not aware of any plans to have more than five sets (four in service one on standby/maintenance). There is a possibility of extending the sets up to six carriages from the present five but that's about it I think.

If DB do have any spare MK3 carriages, there is a possibility that they could be used by ATW if the carriages are wired to work with a 67 & dvt

Travelled yesterday on the 10:55 from Birmingham Moor Street and returned on the 13:37 from London. There had been a "problem" with the usual train consist and it was made up 6 unreburbished Mk3 coaches.
The DVT was at the Birmingham end(painted blue). the next coach (Coach A) was in the old Virgin Mk3 livery. B,C & D were in the old blue and grey Intercity livery, (as sometimes seen on the W & S sets.)Coaches E & F were in the old Virgin livery. The 67 was grey and named after the canal aqueduct near
Llangollen. There were no power points or WiFi available.

The guard (or what ever the correct title is these days) announced before each station stop that passengers should wait for the illuminated panel above the door to show the locks had been released and then lower the window to open the door. If they were the last to leave they were asked to slam the door shut to avoid delays to the train departure.

The Chiltern LHCS fleet is sized for the Evergreen 3 phase 2 timetable, when a significant number of 168s will be diverted to Oxford services. So anything that happens before the Bicester route opens is transitional, and I'd suggest it is highly unlikely there'll be 'spares'...

Anyone know why they didn't save time (and probably cash) by buying the Irish Rail Mk 3s which already have powered doors? Chances are they'll need extra stock in the near future anyway, and any excess could be cascaded usefully to ATW.

They would need new bogies, as they are of a different gauge and shiiping costs would be very high and I think electrical systems are not compatible, although not 100% sure.

Because they would need regauging, an proper interior refurbishment and rewiring for GB ETS systems whilst the former WSMR rolling stock needs only doors fitting whilst the rest of the Chiltern Mk3s need perhaps a light interior refresh and doors.

I'm not sure where cost saving are to be made by using the Irish Mk3s? Or for that matter time savings?

Well, I'm no expert, but as most of the existing coaches are being refurbished, and will need some rewiring for the doors, there's little advantage - and I'd have thought the rebuilding required for door conversion would be the biggest - and costliest, and most time-consuming - part of the work.

I'd be surprised if re-gauging was a huge issue these days, as a program of bogie changes and alterations isn't a particularly challenging engineering issue.

Changing bogies isn't a problem if you've got them. There simply aren't enough spare mk. 3 bogies available to convert the Iarnrod Eireann stock. Bogies would have to be manufactured from new or the Irish ones would have to be re-engineered and widened.

I know the power-door mark 3s aren't in service yet, but apparently a second rake was sent to Doncaster. Does this mean the first rake has the new doors and is sitting outside the workshop? If so, any pics?

Somebody who may be very high up in the corridors of power at Chiltern may have bought a lot of Mark 3 coaches when for a song when the coaches were so out of favour that people were struggling to give them away. Those coaches were always going to be used at some point.

Unless, of course, you happen to own a number of redundant Mk 3 Sleepers, like a certain TOC is rumoured to...

Or even someone who was high up in WSMR as it was them who initiated the idea from the EWS company train.

There were no signs of a Chiltern rake having been fitted with power doors sitting in the works yard at Doncaster the weekend before last: There was a split-up Wrexham & Shropshire silver rake scattered around the place, but still with the original slam doors and I don't know whether this was the first Chiltern rake to have gone to Donny or the second one that has ostensibly been moved there.

One would hope that we would see a new sleeper route if that was the case.... but I doubt it :(

Will these powered doors see the end of lean-outable droplights?

Yes - the prototypes photographed have done away with them. They are almost triangular in shape, tapering to a point up in the air at the end of the coach. I think they look good to the eye.

Are there any publishable pictures?

Why on earth would they keep them? I've long wondered why, with CDL fitted to all mark 3 stock, they remain at all- surely on the rest it would be practical to fit an internal handle and end the need to lean out to open the door (difficult for many passengers to do!)

Because then while the train is at a station someone could lean on the door and have it open under them even if they werent trying to disembarque, this way you are sure the person wants to open the door.
