I believe Chiltern are added extra carriages to some mainline service from today - are they branded stock or just spare they have obtained?

They are refurbished power door mark 3 coaches from Wabtec in Doncaster which will be in full Chiltern livery.
The 06:19 and 06:55 Moor Street - Marylebone (and all additional trains associated with those diagrams) are now six passenger coaches plus locomotive & DVT, up from five.
The 07:33 BMO-MYB is now formed of a class 168 and class 172 too. It was previously quite rare to see a class 172 north of Bicester.

Crossforth posted a video of a Chiltern loco hauled service formed of a DVT + 7 mk3s + 67. You can find the video here, the coaches seem to be from a ex Cargo-D set with a ex Virgin coach.

That'll be the Banbury commuter rake, rather than one of the silver "Mainline" sets that work between Birmingham and Marylebone. Chiltern have continued to repaint ex-Virgin vehicles in the rake into BR blue & grey livery to match those that already carried this scheme when the set was formed up.

What's the longest practical Loco+coaches+DVT formation the line can take?
or another way
what's the longest formation the 67 can handle without badly impairing the performance?

You might also want to consider the maximum platform lengths: I wonder whether the bay platforms at Moor Street (Or for that matter, the stabling sidings) would be capable of holding anything longer than the newly instated six carriage rakes plus DVT and loco; From observing the five carriage formations that have been in use since Chiltern took them on, it has appeared that six carriages would be the limit. The last time I saw the commuter rake at Moor Street deputising for an unavailable silver set was before it had the seventh carriage added.

That was sort of my first question- so six carriages it likely is (ie about the same length as an 8-car 168 formation)?

It's not necessarily the line the ETH index will come into consideration as will performance, at the moment the 67+5coaches + DVT out performs a 168 on accelleration between 40mph and 100, with 6 coaches it will be similar to a 168 and with 7 no chance.

Thankyou for the answers- taking those together, it would seem loco+7+DVT would both be too long for the platforms and would cause accelration to be unnaceptably slow?

I have a question... Does the class 67 loco deliver less power to the wheels if it has to provide hotel power to all the carriages? If so, could the engine in the DVT provide hotel power leaving the loco to provide 100% of its power to traction? If so, could the rake be run like this and take an extra coach with minimum performance hit?

It seems rake #4 will be quite different inside to the others! A lot more airline seating inside than the ex WSMR sets which only have two rows of airline seats per vehicle.
Still quite nice of course but not a patch on the existing coaches.

I wonder if this set will be split and the four sets reformed so each has a mixture of high and low density coaches. It would seem to make sense.

I think those pictures being posted at work are of the interior of the converted FGW buffets, the colour scheme is typical of FGW and the seats are of the same design. Someone has dropped a clanger me thinks!!

I agree that would make sense - Chiltern are very keen to promote how the Mainline trains have a high percentage of table seats, and this would certainly be a wise idea if these refurbished coaches are going to have a lot more airline seats.
