Does anyone know if the Chiltern loco-hauled sets have ever been used on unbooked workings in place of a DMU, either on their regular routes or on services that are normally all DMU such as Marylebone-Aylesbury (either via Amersham or Princes Risborough)? Obviously they wouldn't really be suitable for Marylebone-Aylesbury because of the stop-start nature of such services.

They wouldn't be used an Aylesbury services via Amersham because they are not fitted with tripcocks, for a start.

68s and LHCS have occasionally been used to provide additional capacity on occasions when it has been required such as when the WCML has been closed, but substituting a LHCS set on a unit diagram is potentially going to lead to problems with traincrew knowledge and so on.

Chiltern south of Banbury is a DOO railway for units, and the guards are north of Banbury, so the likelihood of them just dropping onto another service unplanned is almost nil.

They'd only go to Aylesbury for maintenance purposes, via high Wycombe, they can't go via amersham

Full sets do not go to Aylesbury for maintenance and the occasional vehicle that arrives at Aylesbury (usually for tyre-turning) certainly doesn't run in passenger service.

Yes, it does happen, very occasionally. What is more regular is normal unit diagrams being STP Mk3 sets for a specific day due to WCML closure, or football etc. I've had 68s on Princes Risborough shuttles, and the 2102 Stourbridge for example.

A common one for football at the moment is the 1445 BMO - MYB returning on the 1737 MYB - BMO. Set goes ECS to Wembley both ways.
