Been looking at this and the wording seems to suggest you can collect your ticket from *any* TVM with your payment card and reference number rather than having to specify a particular location.

Does anyone know if that's true?

You can normally collect any TOD ticket from any TVM. There are a few exceptions, for example some Southern tickets can only be collected from Southern TVMs.

But even that may not be true. I managed to print my 90% off tickets at Crayford with no issues.

Are any of them with only seven alphanumeric digits instead of eight? If so then it could be good news.

You can collect them from any TOD enabled TVM and, failing that, a TOD enabled ticket office. As I understand it, Northern Rail TVMs are not TOD enabled, even if they stand next to TVMs that are enabled. Northern Rail ticket office machines also cannot issue them.

Both references were 8-digit. The first ones were 90% off advance tickets to Brighton for late July. I said I'd pick them up from Victoria but actually picked them up from Crayford. The second ones were the 35% off off-peak tickets from East Croydon to Eridge a couple of weeks ago. This time I said I would pick them up from Crayford and it didn't complain. I did pick them up there as well.

Correct, there are huge areas of Northern's network where Ticket-On-Departure is simply not available (even at large hubs) due to a severe lack of enabled TVMs.
