i need to make a journey from Chesterfield at 0810 on Wednesday to Hull. I need around 4 hours in Hull for a meeting before continuing to York for a few hours to have a couple of beers with friends. I then would travel back on the 2036 from York to Chesterfield.
I am struggling to find fares (3 X Single Tickets) for less than around £60.
Any ideas anyone?

Hmm, expensive XC fares are the problem here

You could combine:
Anytime Day Return (SDR) from Chesterfield to Sheffield (£6.80)
Anytime Day Return (SDR) from Sheffield to York (£21.80)
Off-Peak Day Return (CDR) from Selby to Hull (£15.90)

Total £44.50.

However, you will need to leave Chesterfield on the 07.49 Northern service to Sheffield (arr. 08.04), in order to catch the 08.12 TPE service to Doncaster (arr. 08.37) in order to catch the 09.06 HT service to Hull (arr. 10.01).

The reason is it's almost only Hull Trains that goes from Doncaster to Selby, and you need to go via Selby (not Goole) in order to take advantage of this possibility.

After your meeting in Hull you can get any train from Hull to York. They all go via, and stop at, Selby.

Coming back is much easier: go via any route (Doncaster or Leeds; there are no trains via Pontefract at the time you want to go) between York and Chesterfield.

The following would allow travel on the trains you mentioned.

Chesterfield to Doncaster Anytime Day Return £9.60
Doncaster to Hull Anytime Day Return £19.70
Doncaster to York Off Peak Day Return £18.40

Total £47.70.

You could catch a direct train from Hull to York as a Doncaster to York ticket is valid via Selby.

Sheff1's suggestion is probably better as it's still not clear if Hull Trains will be running the 07.22 Kings Cross - Hull on Wednesday (Adelantes damaged by snow and being repaired).

Anything that avoids relying on Hull Trains at the moment will be of benefit to you. It is pot luck whether any of them run the full distance or indeed at all at the moment.
