Why do they need a third platform at Chesterfield?

I'm not 100% sure whether I'm right but I think it is mainly because of the increased number of trains that now use the section of line between Clay Cross and Sheffield since the introduction of Northerns hourly Nottingham-Leeds service and even more so since EMT increased their London-Sheffield service to 2 trains per hour.

One of the Sheffield-London trains currently is unable to stop at Chesterfield and I heard that platform 3 will enable it to do so.
One XC service in each direction an hour passes through without stopping and I think platform 3 may also be to allow this to pass slower stopping trains with less delays.

Am passing through tomorrow morning; will have a look out :)

They were working on it today, mainly cordoned off, but the "frame" of the platform is in place.

Will be good once its finished, as the Chesterfield - Sheffield traffic has increased from three trains an hour over the last decade to six an hour (twice the service to London from last December, twice the service to Nottingham since Northern started their "Leeds" service and twice the service to Birmingham when the Voyagers came to Cross Country)

Just a shame there's no more capacity going in to Sheffield yet.

The metal platform frame and back fence is looking pretty complete but I suspect that it still needs surfacing and a lot of other work that isn't obvious to the untrained eye.

Does anyone have any info on how long the platform will be? Can you fit a 7 car 222's on there? Or is it only big enough for 2x158's or 5 car 222's?

Its difficult to tell for certain, becaus the new platform is mainly to the south of the existing ones, but I would say it is HST/9 Car Meridian /Voyager length
Alternativly, you could say its been built for years ;)

I have just been through Chesterfield and the entire platform sub frame is in, and I would say half of it has its final platform surface on, the entire length has the back fence fitted to.

I would say that it is a hell of a long way from the end of platform 3 back to the main station buildings, looking good for being done on time though.

There was a class 66 in the platform with some ballast wagons around 16.45 today too.

I don't know what the plans are for which services will use platform 3, but presumably it'll mostly (entirely?) be Nottingham ones, none of which are more than about 4 cars long. Given that there's plenty of space I guess it's been built long as the marginal cost of building it for 12+ cars over building it for (say) 5 would be relatively insignificant, certainly compared to the cost of extending it in years to come.

the platform structure looks very similar to the slow line platforms at East Midlands Parkway and not at all temporary

There are pictures of the completed platform in the NR press release linked to in the other Chesterfield thread in 'general discussion'. It will only be used when needed during engineering works and barriered off normally...

What a waste of cash then, that could be utilised so much more.

The new platform should be used for a new link between Chesterfield and the Robin Hood line. Using current frieght lines and disused lines in north east Derbyshire. New stations could be created for Staveley, Clowne and, maybe, Bolsover.
