Hello,

How does Chesterfield platform 3 work? Do trains go each way? Is it a good platform for thrash?

Good question. Doesn't seem to be all many passenger trains calling at Chesterfield platform 3 on a typical day. And those that do, most, but not all, seem to continue to Sheffield (via Dronfield). But yes, it's bi-directional. Can anyone advise further as regards freight workings?

Northbound freight via Barrow Hill will normally use Platform 3, southbound freight from Barrow Hill will normally stay on the non-platform line but can use 3 if there's a need to.

In my experience it gets used on an adhoc basis for northbound services from Nottingham to allow late running XC or EMR services from Derby to use P1, and proceed to Sheffield first, minimising delays for both services because they can approach and arrive at Chesterfield in parallel. It isn't very useful southbound as far as I can see, in that case if a Nottingham service leaves Sheffield first "out of order" it seems to wait outside Sheffield for the Derby service to overtake it.

It's bi-directional and often used by special services in either direction, particularly those running via Barrow Hill.
