Easy one but i am just checking. Journey and date as above to see the ships for Battle of the Atlantic 70th anniversary. One adult + 2 chn, Family railcard, out 8ish back 6ish. East Midland trains is quoting me £18 ish. My question:-

Would a walk on fare with none of the train restrictions be much dearer? Me and my son do like to jump on and off trains as we travel just to see places and if a less busy train turns up we like to use them.

Also why are EMT not going through to Liverpool Central? I have been advised to change at Parkway.

EMT don't run to Liverpool Central - it's on the Merseyrail network; hence the change at Liverpool Sth Parkway. Otherwise the EMT train continues onto Liverpool Lime Street.

I am an idiot. Warm evening and one glass of Bulmer's has wrecked my brain. I was thinking big station = Central when of course it does not.

I recently got a Sheffield-Liverpool return for £14. Tied to particular trains but just as I wanted them. I would otherwise have bought two tickets Sheffield-Manchester/Manchester-Liverpool day/off peak returns. Would have been about £28 but still cheaper than one ticket.

In your case. A three way split of tickets Chesterfield/Sheffield/Manchester might save you money and get flexibility.

Interestingly, I went to Crewe the other day. £30.50 off-peak return. Could have got a pair Chesterfield-Derby/Derby-Crewe for £20.90. But fancied doing a round trip as Chesterfield-Crewe is also valid via Sheffield & Stockport. However, here's the nonsense bit. An off-peak return from Sheffield to Crewe is £37.20! Advertised route Stockport like most Chesterfield services. So check the off-peak fare to Liverpool and know what you are up against first.
