Chesterfield - Chester advice

Evening all.

I have a nice simple enquire if anyone can help me.

I am looking to travel from Chesterfield - Chester in February with my 13 year old son. We are wanting to travel out via Manchester Piccadilly using the ATW Holyhead class 67 service and then back via Northwich / Stockport so we can tick both bits of line.

Firstly, is this allowed?
Secondly, are there any ways of splitting tickets as we are travelling peak on the way out at the best price is £44 (with F&F railcard)?

First one is almost certainly permitted. No guard is going to question it so I won't even bother with looking up the Routeing Guide.

Second one, what sort of time do you mean by "peak"?

I cannot remember the times exactly, but I think the ATW 67 leaves at just before ten during the week, so I will have to be setting off from Chesterfield some time before.

The main aim of the day is to get the 67 but coming back we are very relaxed about the time.

There's a small saving to be had if you split at Sheffield as the Off-Peak Return Sheffield to Chester (£35.20 for 1 adult & 1 child with F&F) is restriction 8A - no time restriction at all, but no outward break of journey. You'd still need to add £5.55 Anytime day returns to get from Chesterfield to Sheffield though.

Further small savings if you split the Sheffield to Chester at Manchester - Sheffield to Manchester Off-Peak Return is £18.10 for both of you and valid on the 08:40 from Sheffield which connects with the 67 in Manchester (note not the Off-Peak Day Return, which is cheaper but not valid until 0930), then Manchester to Chester is £14.95 Anytime Day Return, totalling £33.05 (plus the £5.55 to get to Sheffield).

You could also consider doing the journey the other way round, which unless you want or need several hours in Chester, would allow you to use the offpeak day return mentioned by button boxer, subject to any evening restriction of course.

How are you travelling to Chesterfield Station. Could you not get the train from Dronfield instead as the £35.20 from Sheffield fare is also available from Dronfield. The 0840 train from Sheffield calls at Dronfield at 0827. You would just have to check for connections on the return journey where mostly you will have approx. 30 minutes to wait at Sheffield.

I think we will split the tickets and see how we get on. To answer some of your questions:-

Whenever my son and I travel we do not mind where we end up or how long we stay there. If you have a look at our flickr and youtube sites you will see that we take photos/videos of almost anything so we are happy where ever we are. Also, I live on the Dronfield side of Chesterfield so can get there just about as quickly as getting to Chesterfield and I had never thought about going there first. This might be the opportunity.
