Chesterfield - Carlisle

Need to travel Chesterfield to Carlisle and return, outward on Friday 31st March, returning on Monday 3rd April. Any time's fine but would prefer not too early or too late.

I'd fancied going the cheaper 'via Appleby' route as it seems the line will reopen that weekend, but can't get NRE to give me an itinerary this way. Train Split will do me a split for £56, is there anything better I can do?

Try putting in via Settle in the extra options and see if it does then.

Chesterfield to Appleby Anytime Return - £47.90
Appleby to Carlisle Anytime Return - £10.10

These are the Anytime tickets so you are not tied to any specific train.

The split I suggest above is £58, where is the £56 ticket suggesting you split?

I had no difficulty getting the £63.30 "via Appleby" anytime Chesterfield-Carlisle return by putting in Appleby as the "via" point on the journey planners. I can't see anything better than the split at Garsdale suggested by Trainsplit, but note that one train each way does not call at Garsdale (so that the suggested split combination would not be valid on the non-calling trains).

As for when to travel, well the above tickets have no restrictions or ties to any specific train via Settle/Appleby so just punch in your times on NRE, making sure you put in Settle or Appleby as a "via" and see what suits you.

Change will be in Leeds no doubt from platform 17 all the way over to platforms 1-6

It's very odd, half the time adding a via point doesn't make any difference to the trains NRE offers me. It seems to take closing and reopening the tab for it to stick.

Thanks for the help, I couldn't see where trainsplit was offering me the split (but I'll buy from there anyway!)

Dont Trainsplit add a fee on?

The tickets are standard Anytime ones, you can just buy them from Chesterfield station when you travel. Just ask for an Anytime return to Garsdale and then an Anytime Return from Garsdale to Carlisle. Just be careful that you arent travelling on the only train of the day from Leeds/Carlisle that doesnt stop at Garsdale!

If it's still available, two £15 day tickets and a Chesterfield to Leeds return £22.20) would be cheaper.

Fair enough.

Just make sure you double check which service doesnt stop at Garsdale, hard to check at the moment with the revised timetable but I think northbound the one leaving Leeds just before 10am doesnt stop there, and on the way back its the one around 3pm.

If you get on that one, you are at the mercy of the Northern conductor looking to make some commission for a sale

Confirming the Afternoon 15:xx as the Garsdale avoider.

I have not used one of these rangers but if Chesterfield cant do it the booking office at Leeds certainly can.

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice. Return to Leeds and 2 x Day Rangers worked a treat. Lady at Chesterfield hadn't issued the Day Ranger before but after a bit of discussion managed to find it
