A combined Chester Zoo bus & admission add-on fare is available in conjunction with a rail ticket, much like PLUSBUS. I presume it could be bought together with a Merseyrail Day Saver, but not with a rail-issued Saveaway, a non-rail-issued Saveaway, a Trio ticket or a Merseytravel free pass. Anyone able to confirm or correct?

Yes, you can get the discounted entry using a Day Saver. Merseyrail's website explicitly recommends this. Further information available on the Chester Zoo website here.

I don't see any logistical reason why you couldn't get the add on with a different type of ticket so long as it was valid to Chester station. To buy the add on at any ticket office it's simply a single from CTR to Chester Zoo&Bus. Possibly also available from the TVMs at Chester station.

For students it's cheaper still, at £15 (see here) assuming that offer is still available.

I suspect the best person to ask would be someone who can sell the tickets.

Looking on-line, the zoo site just says you'll need a valid rail ticket for that day, and National Rail isn't much more specific.
