You'd save £1.20 from the above (based on current prices) by buying advance tickets to/from Waterloo rather than "London Undergrnd Zone 1-2" and using Oyster/contactless on London Underground.

If those dates & times don't suit, the cheapest through fare you could use for this journey is probably a "via Hereford" anytime return from Shotton to Southampton, priced at £93.40. It does take about an hour longer on that route compared to London.

Look at splitting at Milton Keynes (Mon-Fri) Watford Junction (Sat-Sun). Southern has advances at £8.50 (Southern Only) to Southampton from both. The journey time is about 50 mins longer than via the tube and Waterloo assuming you observe the cross london time. This is because you only have the one interchange at Clapham Junction. This may also be an advantage if you are concerned about Covid.

Bear in mind that obtaining all the tickets in one easy transaction, with one booking reference, and with one through itinerary, may be worth paying a little extra for.

This can especially be the case if a dispute arises due to a delay or cancellation.
