This message from someone I know seems like the sort of thing for the experts on this forum:

I am trying to get down to Fowey from Chester on May 25th to stay with friends, before going up to a party in Newquay later that week, then onto Wiltshire with friends in their car where I can then get the train back to Chester. Just wondered about trains to Fowey (well Par, as its nearest station) and its £120 one way!!!! OMG.

At that price it looks like one of XC's (in)famous flow pricings; clearly a bit of fare splitting will easily reduce it, but what choice of tickets should I recommend to her, please?

That's the Off Peak Single. Advance fares are available at much lower prices, for example an 08:55 departure from Chester is currently showing as £39.

Could be worth splitting something along the lines of Chester - Newport (AP fares start from £13), then Newport - Par (again, fares start from £13).

obviously, the return is about the same price, so it won't cost any more than that - although it does depend where in Wiltshire she is returning from.

In general, lots of splitting works for these journeys.

returns to Wolverhampton, Cheltenham, Bristol; then singles to Taunton, Plymouth and Par would come to about £90.

If you are looking for advance fares, it may also be worthwhile trying to split them at Bristol or possibly Birmingham.
