Chester to London Euston, Tuesday 3rd

My friend needs to go from Chester to London tomorow, We just looked on nationalrail, and the £70 day return has gone, the cheapest way is a £30.50 single to London, and a £96.50 single back.
He doesnt want to mess about changing trains, he wants the virgin service as its quicker.
Am I typing something wrong in the journey details or something.

Chester to London is one of the most expensive routes in the area,tomorrow is a busy day, so all cheap tickets will have gone for sure.tell him to book his return to flint or shotton & get a bus back, if its that expensive to Chester

I know it does not answer the question.

£70 off-peak return to London IS still available as it's a walk-on fare, but the earliest direct train to London it's valid on is the 0935 from Chester.

If your friend needs to travel earlier then it's the same price travelling from Shotton but he can ARRIVE in London anytime after 1000.

As has been said this is avalible to buy at the station on the day or online and is valid from/ to Euston as shown bellow monday to friday

Other London terminals have diffrent restrictions and there are no restrictions on weekends bank holidays.

Ticket from Shotton at £70 gets you into London just after 1000, ticket from Chester is 1230 at the soonest.

I would buy the Shotton ticket for the flexibility, the return restrictions for it are:

Note that departure on the 16:10 from Euston is not permitted, break of journey heading towards London is also not permitted.

0935 Chester to London gets you there for 1138 and is valid on the Chester off peak return. I would get the Shotton ticket though if you want to arrive earlier and have flexibility back out of Euston (but note you cannot use it on the 1610 direct to Chester)

But as Wintonian has already pointed out break of journey isn't allowed on the outward leg of the Shotton ticket so they will in theory have to physically travel from Shotton, and not start short at Chester, or they risk being charged an excess fare. It's well worth the slightly longer travel time though if they want to arrive in London earlier.

It's £3.90 for a single from Chester to Shotton if the extra validity is important.

The £70 ticket is valid all day today because it's a bank holiday.

If your friend doesn't need to depart Euston on the way back between 1500 and 1845, he could buy the £30.50 advance for his outbound journey and a £35.00 online off-peak single (code SVH) for the return.

Book from Shotton, for an extra £3.90 or £4.00 or so return, it's worth starting at Shotton to be on the safe side, just get off at Chester on the return.

That is the price if arriving into London before 11:29 with a Chester to London ticket valid on Virgin.

If he asked for an off peak ticket from Shotton to London (£70) as suggested above he would have been able to arrive in Euston at or after 10:00.

That is the cheaper option of course, but in thread one, you wanted the Virgin Option only, so we tried to assist, what was the total cost of his travel,I presume he paid the Chester/Crewe as well. Did he also have a rail card.
