Chester City-Rail Link 40 Information

Hi everyone,

Going to the Chester area next Thursday on a trip and found there's a shuttle bus (route 40) from the station to the bus station which would be helpful to use. Timings are available on bustimes.org however there is no mention of the route on the operator website, so I have struggled to find info regarding fares for the service. Does anyone know if its still £1 which I found mention to, and are there any child fares available (and what age you can use child fares in Chester to as it varies everywhere!)

The shuttle bus (Aintree/Helm) runs from the railway station to the bus interchange, which is somewhat short of the city centre.
Arriva (buses towards Wrexham (1) and Mold (3/4), and others) also run from the railway station via Delamere St to Foregate St and Grosvenor St, which are a little beyond the city centre (the Cross).
Fares on Arriva have just gone up, but I don't know what they are these days.
You can buy a Chester Plusbus ticket with your rail ticket to Chester for £2.50 (£1.25 child).
This covers Arriva and Stagecoach but NOT the Aintree/Helm station shuttle.

I usually find it quicker to walk - particularly if you're going to somewhere other than the bus station

I got information from Aintree Coaches for anyone wanting to use the 40 City-Rail Link.

The fares on the rail link are £2 single or £3 Return All OAP passes are also valid

Yes, as a local, I wouldn't bother taking the bus to the bus station. If we take Chester Cross as the centre of town, you are just as quick walking from the station (and you hit Wetherspoons and Eastgate Street before that anyway)

Second this. It's not quite on the doorstep but still only 10 minutes away.

If you do a bit of planning you can do this as a circular walk.

As far as I am aware the £2 fare scheme is not applicable in Wales but would apply up to the border, which admittedly in Chester's case is not very far.

It's applicable in all services that are in England, or originate in England. So £2 fare is avaliable on the 1 from Chester to Wrexham, but not Wrexham to Chester.

Doesn't it then proceed along Frodsham Street and Foregate before running back to the station along City Road?

Thus forming a circular route.

Its usefulness really does depend on where you are trying to get to, and the various Arriva options can be better in some circumstances. And walking can also be a good option.
