Chester and Bache Station

Tomorrow and occasionally thereafter, I will be travelling to Manor Road Station for my work. The fare is £5.75 single or £6.05 return from Chester.
This is also the same fare from Bache Station.

Here is the problem, each morning I undertake this journey, I want to board the train at Bache, but then return to Chester. However, as Bache station is a machine and unmanned, I can only purchase a ticket with a departure point of Bache. When I get back to Chester, the ticket would be deemed invalid and I presume would not allow any exit through the barriers.

I cant get to Chester in the Morning when using the train as public transport wont allow me to get there in time, however, it will Bache.

I also wont know until late the night before whether I need to use the train the next day, so cannot buy a ticket in advance! Seems a bit daft to be buying 2 singles!

Any suggestions appreciated

Purchase a return from Bache to Manor Road, when you change at Liverpool Central, pop to the ticket office and explain the situation you have and they should be able to do a zero fare excess for the RTN portion to Chester.

Alternatively, once you've done the first journey & arrived back in Chester, buy a ticket at Chester station for the next day you know you will be travelling.

Thanks for the responses, to clarify I will be travelling morning peak 0741 from Bache, change of train is Hamilton Square and there is insufficient time to get the lift to the ticket office and make connection. So I presume that Manor Road ticket office can issue me a revised ticket? Should this be done at the end of the outbound journey or can I show both tickets at the start of the return? Also, I don't know until very late whether I will be travelling by train or car the next day so cannot buy a ticket for the next journey at Chester Station as this is still an unknown!

You can purchase your excess either at the end of your outward journey or at the beginning of your return journey.

If possible, I would recommend buying a ticket for the day after with origin Chester as buying excesses can be quite a faff and not all staff like doing it (especially zero fare ones). In addition, not all staff know how to do it. Of course, I understand that it is not always possible for you to buy in advance, but where you can, it would save you potential grief.

Is it not possible to collect tickets from the TVM at Bache or am I missing something else?

Even if you know late the day before travelling that you will need to travel, the ticket booking system only requires a maximum of 2 hours for collection (normally less), and the FGW and Chiltern apps both offer the Chester to Manor Road ticket.

I think it might be worth writing to Merseyrail to try and get some advice from them.
Something in writing that authorises a zero-fare excess may be helpful if the ticket office staff deny such a thing exists ;)
They may even authorise just buying a return ticket from Bache for a return back to Chester.
