Cheshire Day Ranger Validity

Can somebody please clarify if there are any weekday evening peak restrictions when using a Cheshire Day Ranger ?

I know Northern don't allow travel in the evening peak if you hold an off peak ticket, but does this extend to Ranger/Rover tickets too ?

THE PEAK HOUR RESTRICTION ON TICKETS ONLY APPLY TO JOURNEYS WITHIN EACH METRO COUNTY PTE and certain other routes e.g. Manchester to Buxton They do not apply to journeys from or to stations outside the county borders(with a few exceptions as detailed above) so rover/ranger tickets which include a significant area outside Manchester etc have no evening restriction these are detailed on the National rail rover/ranger pages.

I've had both Cheshire and Lancashire Day Rangers this year and had no problems using them right through the evening peak.

I've had the use of a Lancashire Day Ranger in the evening peak questioned, twice on the same day, by the same STM employee, at Bolton. The ticket office confirmed I was in the right though.

It's valid on any service departing after 08:45 on weekdays (within the area it's valid in) and any service at weekends.

Ticket offices aren't always right though. They (Lime St) told me that the Lancashire Day Ranger was valid on an EMT train from there to Piccadilly along the CLC. In my ignorance, I believed them. Fortunately, the EMT TM just waved at it as he passed through. I checked when I got home, ooops!

It's valid as per the NRCoC, including Condition 10. Had you been charged, EMT would have been in breach of NRCoC 10.

I pass them as I think it's daft that they're valid on the chat moss but not the CLC but good luck with your interpretation of that condition!

My interpretation is that the publicity for rovers and rangers advertises their validity but I believe this argument has been done before without consensus

You can try and use a West Mids Day Ranger out of Oban if you like on that basis but you won't get very far (then again, you might!).

The ticket defines itself as a Lancashire Day Ranger, and the restrictions for that definition are available online.

Otherwise is the use of restriction codes that refer you to information elsewhere as they're not fully defined on the ticket also in breach

Was just wondering if you could point me in the direction of these restrictions? I wasn't aware they existed bar morning peak even after the creation of afternoon peak on certain journeys.

It's valid on EMT services from Piccadilly to Oxford Road anyway as far as I know - it's only the stupid map that prevents it from being valid on trains via Warrington Central. I'd be quite happy to advocate your view in favour of the passenger that it just gets you from Lime Street to Manchester and the fact the train is booked via Warrington is irrelevant.

In all honesty staff knowledge is so sketchy of different rovers and rangers (on the whole, there are ones with extremely good knowledge too!) that, in practice, I don't think you would have had many issues with using it via the CLC.

This coming from someone who has encountered guards who thought that the South Pennines Day Ranger was valid to Stoke-on-Trent and Nottingham
