Well I certainly wouldn't go wandering around the reactor itself (especially with that dodgy Russian concrete), but I have always fancied visiting Pripyat and that's not too bad for radiation doses. Still wouldn't want to hang around for longer than a few hours though...

It's well known that the shell is full of, some rather large, holes.

That does put things in perspective. Spending a year living in Didcot might be worse than a year living in Leiston, although not as bad as a single CT scan.

I have even heard rumours that the radiation itself can't believe its luck by being burried in dodgy russian concrete

At least once they get the New Safe Confinement over it then it should be safe enough for some time. Really the orginal structure has not done bad considering how quick it was built and under what conditions. It was only intended to be temporary afterall until a more permenant structure could be built.

Apparently Didcot (Ladygrove to be precise) has one of the longest life expectancies in the country, so maybe the preservative effect of all the mercury guards against the radiation?

Leaf vegetables and Milk from Fukushima has been banned from sale because its contamination level is 'dangerous to human health' according to the Japanese government. Other products with lower level contamination will continue to be sold as they claim the radiation contamination is only equivalent to a CT scan.
