Cheltenham to Coleshill Off Peak Ticket validity

My daughter travelled last Friday from Bath to Coleshill Parkway. Off peak return split at Cheltenham with 18-25 R/C (travelling back today.)

On the last leg of the journey from Birmingham to Coleshill 17.52 the ticket inspector informed her that off peak tickets were not valid on this service!

Is this correct?

No it is not correct. The return (and outward for that matter) portion of a Cheltenham - Coleshill, or Coleshill - Cheltenham, Off-Peak Return (not Day) ticket is valid at any time after 09.30.

So the ticket the inspector said was not valid was a Cheltenham Spa - Coleshill Parkway Off-Peak Return? In that case they were wrong as that ticket has restriction 2V which only restricts travel before 0930. However, if your daughter had an Off-Peak Day Return the inspector was correct as they have restriction BX which restricts travel before 0930 and between 1530 and 1815.

Can you confirm this is the fare for £14.70 between Coleshill Parkway and Cheltenham Spa? If this is the case the relevant restriction is 2V which states:

The details for 2V
Monday to Friday only - no
travel restrictions on any
other days.

OUTWARD & RETURN TRAVEL
By any train except those
scheduled to depart before
0930.

This restriction is lifted all
day from Monday 24 December
2012 until Tuesday 01 January
2013 inclusive.

So no, it was completely valid on the 1752 from New Street on weekday.

Did he charge her an excess fare (which I'd expect to be £7.40 calculated as the Anytime £22.10 minus the Off Peak £14.70 = £7.40)? If so, XC need to refund her.

The train was actually pulling into Coleshill station when her ticket was checked. When the ticket inspector actually said it to her she replied 'well my dad said it was okay'! And got off the train.

I might add she was very worried when I sent her the tickets (as she is at Uni at Bath) and wondered why i sent her two lots of (split) tickets - I explained it was cheaper and quite within the law etc.

Yes. It was 14.70 return from C/Ham to Coleshill.
