Stuck on the GEML
To anyone who has a copy of the routeing guide and maps and knows how to use them - help!

I wish to travel from Chelmsford to Langley Mill on 27 December and back again on 29 December but the GEML is out south of Ingatestone between Christmas and New Year. If I buy an "any permitted" return, will that allow me to travel instead via Ipswich or even Norwich? Many thanks in advance.

The £79.20 super offpeak "via Nottingham" ticket would be valid via Ipswich & Ely (or Ipswich, Cambridge & Ely) to Peterborough then via Stamford to Leicester and then via East Midlands Parkway to Nottingham and then on to Langley Mill.

Try using the Advanced Options on new.trainsplit.com to put Ely and Nottingham as "via" points and Grantham as an "avoid" point and opt for "flexible" at the top of the screen. Trainsplit also offers some cheaper options, and may well offer different options if you omit the via/avoid points. (E.g. £59.31 for outward on the 0859 arriving 1436 and changing at Stowmarket, Peterborough, Leicester and Nottingham, and return on the 1640 arriving 2225 and changing at the same places.) Or try putting Norwich instead of Ely as a via point to get some split tickets via Norwich, Oakham, Leicester and Nottingham for around £77.

EDIT: the £79.20 ticket is also valid on the East Midland Trains services from Ely to Nottingham (calling at Peterborough and Grantham: these are the Norwich to Liverpool trains).
