Cheapest way to sample HS1

Hi all

I have a free ticket for WSMR from Shrewsbury to Marylebone and my Oyster at the ready to get across to St. Pancras.

What is the chespest way to travel from St. Pancras to Ashford (or anywhere south thereof) ?

I can book in advance on any Mon-Sat as necessary.

I have seen some £11 advance Rugby-Dover tickets that the VT website show as valid on HS1 - I presume the Rugby-Euston bit is the only bit that must be used on a specific train, so can I get that and just use the HS1 bit ?

I'm doing exactly that (but from Ramsgate and in the opposite direction, going up to Stoke) and can't see a problem with doing it - as it's effectively a 'Any Permitted' ticket between Euston and Dover and there's been a lot of talk about how they're valid on HS1 on these very forums

If you can get them for £11 each way, then yes that may be the cheapest way of doing it, but you only save £2.90 if returning the same day.

Although it does also give you a free journey on LU! But so does a ticket from St Albans or Harpenden, at £24.70 CDR (also saving 20p).
