I'm looking for the cheapest way of getting from Worcester to Newcastle by train.

I'm on a limited budget and the price seems to be so expensive, even buying advance purchase tickets.

I'm flexible and can go any time in the next week, but I would preferably like to start as early as possible in the day. I don't mind if it takes an hour or two longer to get there, it's the price that's the important thing.

I've tried splitting the journey at Birmingham and Derby but the price is still too high for me.

The cheapest I've found so far is an advance purchase ticket from Worcester to Haydon Bridge (changing at Birmingham and Carlisle), and then a single from Haydon Bridge.

Any ideas please?

How much is that?

Do you have a railcard?

Is it a one way trip?

I've seen an advance purchase ticket Worcester to Haydon Bridge for £26. Plus Haydon Bridge to Newcastle is £10. I know it takes quite a lot longer than going via Derby / Sheffield but I can't find any cheaper price. But even then, that makes it over £70 return, assuming I can get a similar ticket on my way back.

No, I don't qualify for any railcard.

Yes, it's a return journey, but I am flexible with my return times. I want 2 or 3 days in Newcastle.

When you say you’re flexible with your return times, do you mean that you need to be able to decide on the day which train to get home, or that you are able to commit to taking a specific train in a range of times?

Meaning that I can commit to taking a specific train back in a range of times.

I'll say I want two nights in Newcastle. It doesn't matter what time I leave on the day I return, as long as it's the cheapest possible price.

I can Worcester leave any day between tomorrow and Wednesday next week.

If you can get hold of the tokens, Northern's £10 day ranger ticket offer still has a couple of weeks to run.

You could get to Newcastle from Crewe or Stoke with one of these tickets. But it would be a slow journey.

You'd need four tokens, that were printed in newspapers a few weeks ago. Maybe someone can help you obtain them - or you could order the papers from the publishers.

Thanks, I never knew about that. I doubt I'll be able to get hold of the tokens now, but it would have been cheap as I can get an advance purchase ticket from Worcester to Crewe for £9.50.

Using new.trainsplit.com (and LNER) I can get the price down to £52.50.

Try searching for leaving Worcester after 6am on Tuesday 3rd July, returning from Newcastle after different times (e.g. 10am, 12 noon, 4pm) on Thursday 5th July, and using Advanced Options to specify via Carlisle.

An outward itinerary might be: Worcester Foregate St 0602 - Birmingham New St 0649/0701 - Crewe 0756/0809 - Carlisle 0959/1046 - Newcastle 1211.

The outward tickets would be: Worcester-Crewe £9.50 advance; Crewe-Carlisle £11 advance; Carlisle-Newcastle £3 advance. The return journey would be Newcastle-Carlisle £3 advance; Carlisle-Worcester £26 advance

The return times would be: Newcastle 1415 - Carlisle 1541/1857 - Birmingham New St 2154/2300 - Worcester Shrub Hill 2339
