Hi, a friend is starting a new job in central London in September and has asked me about the cheapest way to commute from Cheshunt to a zone 1 station, maybe Holborn. He will be commuting 5 days a week, for usual office hours, and he has a 16-25 railcard. And he mentioned wanting to avoid an annual season ticket for now (but I think monthly/weekly would be okay). What would be the cheapest way to to do this?
Thanks, Daniel

Oyster with railcard discount added, surely.

Without the railcard discount, the weekly cap would be £76.40.

Buying a Cheshunt to Underground Zones 1-3 Anytime Day Return each day, with his 16-25 Railcard, would probably work out as the cheapest option. This would cost £14.35 per day which is less than any of the alternatives in terms of season tickets, or indeed using Oyster which would be £8.20 each way at peak times for a total cost of £16.40 per day.

Of course if he bought a season ticket then he could also travel into London on the weekends for free, which may influence the decision. A weekly season to Liverpool Street would be £72.70; to Zones 1-8 it would be £104.90.

I think the Anytime Day Return at £14.35 sounds like the best option for him, as obviously if there are any days he doesn't need to travel then he saves. I assume that would be available from the ticket machines in Cheshunt?

Yes, it would be. Of course there are various websites like LNER or Uber that provide incentives such as cashback which he may wish to use. He'd have to collect the ticket at a ticket machine though, as tickets like this can't be issued in barcode or smartcard format because of the validity on the Tube.

Although there is no cost advantage, there may be convenience advantage in booking several days worth of tickets on line, and then making one visit to the ticket machine at a less busy time, such as in the evening on return from one of the trips, and collecting the next few days tickets. Always good to avoid queues at ticket machines on a Monday morning.
