Cheapest ticket Worcester to Newtown

I want to know what would be the cheapest way to buy a day return from Worcester to Newton (Powys), please.

Does anybody know of any combination of tickets for under £30?

I'll be travelling on a Saturday, returning the same day. I don't want advance purchase tickets as I want flexibility and also want to be able to have the option of breaking my journey. I don't mind if I have to take a longer journey if it means it's cheaper (up to about an extra hour). I don't qualify to get any railcards.

Split at Longbridge

The cheapest split I can see is at Rowley Regis:

Off-Peak Day Return Worcester Stns to Rowley Regis (£9.50)
Anytime Day Return Rowley Regis to Newtown (£23.10 - NB, no Off-Peak Day Return is available for this flow)

For a total of £32.60.

That shouldn't really impose any significant restriction, as the fastest itineraries generally involve changing at Smethwick Galton Bridge to/from a train that stops at Rowley Regis anyway. But if you wanted to maintain maximum flexibility (to allow you to go via New Street) you could split at Smethwick GB instead for £1 extra.

So, provided travel your itinerary takes you on trains that actually call and stop at Longbridge (but do they, can't seem to find many that do so call?!) then what you propose should be o.k.

Otherwise, you may need to choose a more appropriate splitting point, which may be slightly more expensive.

That's was what I was thinking.

I was going to change at Bromsgrove, then my train will call at Longbridge. I have plenty of time because the first train I can get from New Street to Newtown is at 8.25.

That's was what I was thinking.

I was going to change at Bromsgrove, then my train will call at Longbridge. I have plenty ob time because the first train I can get from New Street to Newtown is at 8.25.

How about I pay 60p more and split the ticket at Northfield? Worcester to Northfield tickets are valid with a change at New Street.

If you want to save a few ££ by splitting at Longbridge, that's entirely your shout, but to re-iterate, you do need to be on trains which call at Longbridge in both the outward and return directions, which will almost certainly result in extended journey times as @Watershed has pointed out, and you won't be able to travel on Worcester trains via the Kidderminster/ Rowley Regis line.

All depends on if you want to potentially spend part of your day waiting for hourly/half hourly connections at Bromsgrove in order to catch trains that call / have called at Longbridge (or Northfield) for not much saving.

How about buying a ticket from Worcester to Smethwick Rolfe Street? That's £8.80 return and then I can actually change at either New Street or Galton Bridge?

Then either buy the return ticket from either Rolfe Street, Galton Bridge, or New Street to Newtown - whichever is cheaper / gives me more travel options.
