Original post by OP indicated same day return, off peak travel, midweek journey, no set date, no railcard held.

Subsequently clarified as being a through journey from Barking -> Kemble and return.
Yes, I know. I asked for further clarity as to his goals as “off-peak” isn’t sufficiently clear.

OP probably just wants walk up fares and to avoid travelling at a time when Anytime tickets would be needed, as they are somewhat more expensive!

Hi all, Just to clarify:

I am less concerned about the Barking to Paddington route where I can pay PAYG oyster (where the difference between peak and off-peak is not great), but more concerned with the GWR leg of the journey. Obviously if a through journey from Barking to Kemble was cheaper, I would opt for that.

Weekday travel, no set arrival time in Kemble other than it being before midday, off-peak therefore is ideal to minimise cost (I appreciate from previous replies that off peak means different things to different train providers) but my priority is to get there at lowest possible cost as I would have to do this journey once a week, and sometimes twice a week, so over time, the savings would add up.

Dont have any railcard, but may consider getting a Network card if it lowers the cost up to Didcot, providing I can still get there before midday. Return journeys - dont really mind when as long as I can get back to London some time in evening.

ideally want to find a set up that saves cost each time, eg if advances were made available, I can plan and purchase weeks in advance to save costs.

With a Network card, you can get a ticket for the 10.28 from Paddington that gets to Kemble for 11.40. For that train, you can get a day return if you get a Network card return from Paddington to Didcot (£19.05), and off peak day returns from Didcot to Swindon (£14.30) and Swindon to Kemble (£7.30), for a total of £40.65.

splitticketing.com charge a fee based on the saving they find. You can buy those tickets in a single transaction for £42.43

Further to my "wait until Monday" comment it seems like £16 one ways are now available on loads of trains, (even perceived "peak" ones) between Paddington and Swindon on Bristol and South Wales services from Monday 2nd August. The Cheltenhams are not reduced the same way though because most are booked 5 car trains so the room isn't there.

So my plan would be-
Get the xx00 Paddington to Bristol TM service arriving Swindon xx55 (or the 0908 arriving 1007) for £16 and await the following xx28 Swindon to Kemble with a £7.30 CDR. Then the same on the way back- xx44 or so Kemble to Swindon, alight and wait 10 minutes and get xx11 to Paddington for £16. £39.30.

Actually the advances starting back at Barking are £1.90 each way to go overground to Fenchurch Street and tube to Paddington so there's another bit of a saving.
