Peak Day Return: Ely to Oxford = £95.40

* Ely to Cambridge = £6.70
* Cambridge to Slough = £43.80
* Slough to Oxford = £21.00

TOTAL = £71.50 (saving £23.90)

* Ely to Letchworth (garden city) = £14.10
* Letchworth (garden city) to Slough = £35.20
* Slough to Oxford = £21.00

TOTAL = £70.30 (SAVING £25.10)


Can anyone better the latter?

No ADV Singles please. Prefer Flexibility.

Need to be in Oxford as early as (before 9am). . . So Can't do Split Peak and Split Off Peak either.

NO Railcards (apart from NSE which isn't applicable).

Welcome to the forum but please note there is a forum policy NOT to use 3 letter codes,unless the names of the places have been given in full earlier in the post. LET and SLO means absolutely nothing to me I am afraid!

I do think a bit of common sense would be most useful when dealing with station codes. After all, I timed looking one up as taking approximately 7.5 seconds without a tab already open.

OFX is clearly a typo.

Your first option to split at cambridge & slough would work better I think.
Some fast trains from Cambridge call at Letchworth in the morning peak (Some morning fast trains don't call at Letchworth e.g. the 07:15 or 07:45 from Cambridge) but none call in the evening between the 16:44 and 19:15 departures from Kings cross- during that period the fast trains to Letchworth all terminate at Royston (then they do call half hourly after that) so splitting at Letchworth would not work if you want to travel home on a fast train during those times.


Your first option of Splitting at Slough should work as I think most Oxford trains call at Slough (the ones I have used to Oxford all called there).

Picking up on that final point philjo, I used to find that sometimes the quickest route between Oxford and Paddington could be on a Cross Country train as far as Reading, followed by a change on to a FGW long-distance service which doesn't call anywhere else before Paddington. It's been a while since I've made the journey though so I don't know how often that works out the quickest way these days.

Further to my original request, can anyone find the cheapest split ticket for weekend travel please?

Bearing in mind I DO have a NSE card (no minimum fare restriction), and FCC offer Super Off Peak Day Returns on weekends.

Would it be best to split at London, or elsewhere?

Absolute cheapest? Probably a return to Cambridge then Stagecoach X5.

Though the first Stagecoach X5 bus doesn't get into Oxford until 1005 (0610 from Cambridge). Buses run every half hour.

The X5 bus can be booked via the Megabus site from just £1 (though like advances on trains you are limited to the time of the bus that you book onto)

Finsbury Park - Oxford (to get the x-London transfer) £17.70
Total: £30.25, saving £8.15 with no loss of flexibility.
