Cheapest fare from: Cardiff to York

Heyyy guys I need some of your ticketing skills -

I want a cheap ticket from Cardiff to York booked in advance for Friday between 10 - 11.

I want to avoid changing at; Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Bristol if possible.

Maybe small station to small station?

Assuming that you just want a single;
You can get an Advance single from Cardiff to Burton on Trent,
leave 10:45, arrive 13:18 for £18
then an Advance single from Burton on Trent to York; leave 13:26 arrive 15:29 for £30

I think Burton is about as easy as it gets for changing train.

Splitting at Manchester can be cheapest. I don't see why you'd want to avoid Manchester Piccadilly? it's a nice station.

Is it really worth a £21.50 premium to avoid the fantastic architecture of Piccadilly to change at a lump of concrete?

Today it was a case of walking from platform 8 to platform 2, they are only 50 metres apart (source: Google Earth).

Does that Manchester Airport to Newcastle train always go in on those platforms?

Piccadilly is an easy change if you don't have to go up to Platform 13/14, just walk to the end of the platform and you can see where everything is from there - you don't have to use any bridges / tunnels or even go onto the concourse.

I don't know, but trains are pretty much guaranteed to either use terminal platforms or through platforms, and if it's the latter then it's no different to changing at BUT. If you choose trains that use terminal platforms then it really doesn't matter what the platforms are as it's an easy walk over the footbridge (at the rear of the terminating train) or at the buffers (at the front) there is no footbridge required, so not really that different to changing at BUT either.

The only way you have an awkward connection is by choosing one train that uses the through platforms plus one train that does not. So with TPE toward York you just avoid the Liverpools. Easy!
