This isn't a trivia question as such, rather I was just looking to find the cheapest available Advance tickets that would enable one to do a bit of testing regarding the different processes used by retailers for amending said tickets.

So, child tickets are fine - the crucial thing is actual real-world availability, rather than them just existing in the fares database (but never being released).

I have searched RUKF for previous discussions on this, but haven't had any joy in finding dirt cheap Advance tickets available in the wild.

Thanks.

There are plenty of Northern ones only costing a couple of quid, try pretty much anywhere on their network, they're usually in fairly big numbers and around the £1-2 mark right up to travel for short journeys. If child tickets are OK then just halve it! :)

Local journeys in the Leeds area (e.g. to somewhere like Bradford) would be worth a try.

Many Northern journeys around Manchester seem to have very cheap Advance tickets. For example, Cheadle Hulme to Manchester Piccadilly on WEdnesday 9 October at 10:21 is currently only £2.30 for an adult.

It's also allegedly (I haven't looked myself) possible to get a child LNER First advance between them for £1.35; half the price of the cheapest Leeds – Wakefield advance first class fare in the database.

Edit: £1.40 is definitely possible.

Plenty of £1.05 child advances between Stockport and Manchester.
Last year I got Newcastle – Carlisle advances with a railcard for £1.95 quite regularly (I think now up to £2.10 at a minimum), so that should be ~£1.60 for child fares. Not the cheapest mentioned so far, but the cheapest for its length.

Can it be reduced any further using railcards? I've looked with a disabled railcard on the TfW website and it still said 50p, and trying with an adult, three children* and a family & friends railcard says £2.50, so no cheaper.

*Due to up to 2 children travelling for free with adults with TfW

No, for one ticket only you cannot get cheaper than a child fare.

Any ticket less than £10 would not be worth amending (unless it's a retailer that waives the fee).
