Both operators were right-hand running. The right-hand running SNCV ran the Anderlues line since forever and STIC were primarily on-street tramways. The two left-running lines are post-1980s metro lines built from new. So it still doesn't make any sense.

Sorry to revive this but I'm a little confused by the TEC fares structure. Are the zonal fares at the top of the page I'm linking to single fares? Is there no Charleroi area day ticket? If so, to travel the entire metro including Anderlues would I need the €7.50 Walloon day ticket?

suggests a day ticket for 1-2 zones is €4 and for more zones is €8. So to do the whole network requires the €8 ticket. Alternatively the single fares for 1-2 zones are €1.90 (valid up to 60 minutes) and €2.90 (valid up to 90 minutes) for more zones other than 'express routes'.
