Chapel en le Frith to Workington

Hi all

I was hoping to travel from Chapel en le Frith or Chinley to Workington on Sat 12th Apr - attend Workington v Gloucester, stop the night, watch Workington Town v Sheffield Eagles on Sunday 13th April and return after the game had finished, on the 1648 north to Carlisle on onwards home. I want to effectively 'kill two birds with one stone' and I can't reach Workington before 3pm on a Sunday anyway!

There seems to be a lack of advances available for this journey, and the cheapest I can seem to find is the £42.00 Anytime Return - Chinley to Workington. Any solutions? I was hoping to get it for under £30 return, arrive any-time before 2pm on the Saturday, I have to get the 1648 on the Sunday out of Workington. I have a 16-25 railcard.

There are some cheap advances between Chapel and Penrith. All prices include railcard discount. On the Saturday, £4.60 on the 0638 arriving 0931. Or £8.25 on the 0838 arriving 1144.

Then an Anytime Return from Penrith to Workington at £10.10.

Coming back, the 1648 from Workington would get you to Penrith by 1804, or you could perhaps break for longer at Carlisle.

Then a Penrith to Chapel advance at £4.60 on the 2022 arriving 2338.

Total from £19.30.

Or use the Workington-Keswick-Penrith bus (both ways!)

For which the Lakes Day Ranger at £14.20 would cover you N of Lancaster.

I think that Chapeltom wants to go out on the Saturday and come back on the Sunday, so that would be two Lakes day rangers. Also, the suggested advances would seem to be a lot cheaper than obvious tickets between Chapel/Chinley and Lancaster, although clearly the advances could be combined with the pair of day rangers in place of the Penrith-Workington return. Perhaps I should have made it clearer in my first post in this thread that the suggested return times/tickets were for the Sunday.

YHA at Keswick £21 for non-members. You'd have to get a bus there obviously. There is also a YHA at Cockermouth but its details are not online. I'm sure there must be B and Bs in Workington, but the cheapest I can find is £40! If you are alone, Keswick has some great pubs and there's always people to talk to.

Within smell of Jennings brewery (if it's still open)... Are you already a member? If not, I think it's probably worth joining if you stay at least three nights a year.

Generally only stop in hostels when abroad, ideal for this trip though!
