Chaotic experience at Brussels Eurostar check in

Just experienced an incredibly chaotic and unpleasant check in at Brussels. Arrived 17.06 as requested on my ticket for the 17.56 train. The place was absolutely rammed, with huge queues for check in, security and Belgian passport control.

It was highly stressful. I knew that they’d probably hold the train, but people around me didn’t, including my partner, and the stress and tension was palpable. Automated announcements saying that check in was now closed despite there probably being 100 or so people still to do so really didn’t help.

When we got to the platform with 3 minutes to spare, the whole process having taken 47 minutes, we see the train is advertised as +10. (Though my partner didn’t know what that meant so clearly it could be better communicated).

Why not simply tell people checking in that the train is being held, to avoid stress? There were no announcements, no reassurances from staff, nothing. There were also no announcements on the train as to why we were sitting there, eventually departing 12 mins late. Eventually at Lille there was an apology for the now 20 min delay due to ‘passenger congestion’ but no apology for the stressful experience.

But why does this even happen? Eurostar can vary the check in times recommended. They know how many people are on each train. They must know how long it takes to accomplish check in, security and passport control, After operating the terminal for 30 years surely they can better manage the flow of people better than this?!

I know I’m posting this at least partly just to get it off my chest but also I’m just staggered that very simple things like a few reassuring announcements don’t happen.

I’ll of course complain to Eurostar but I really don’t expect anything to change - the company seems entirely complacent while it has a monopoly.

I wonder if they have had issues with the security equipment at Brussels again. I have generally found their requested arrival times to be more than adequate to make the booked train - a security equipment failure would obviously have a compound impact as the day went on.

Eurostar would do very well to adopt the GB National Rail Passenger Information During Disruption standards - their communications leave a lot to be desired as it stands!

I wondered the same. Only two machines were operating out of three. A fourth was available for Premiere - there didn’t seem to be any move to enable standard / plus passengers to use it.

But as the flow even through those two seemed to be slowed due to Belgian passport control backing up maybe that was the real culprit even though all desks bar one were open.

Unfortunately, Brussels Midi's Eurostar departures has a pretty bad reputation for this kind of thing. Your experience is very unlikely to be rare. They also used to have queues across the main thoroughfare which blocked Schengen passengers (i.e. 98% of the numbers using the station) passing through to their platforms.

Happened to me almost exactly 12 months ago exactly as you describe - in my case, huge queues on a Sunday evening hardly moving - with almost zero passenger information.

As ever, priority for space / management thinking has recently been given to opening a large shiny duty free shop…which now has very few potential customers because they’re either stuck in formalities, or too stressed from the general experience to consider purchasing anything!

This is extremely common and has happened to me including pre-Brexit. The facility is just too small for the numbers using it, just like all of Eurostar's other terminals, and is one of the many things that makes it unpleasant to use at times despite the premium pricing that should attract a premium service for all.

They do generally hold the trains assuming people were in the queue at the time check-in closed, but it really isn't good enough.

Though for me Brussels has always been okay so far, and I used it a lot before NL to UK direct Eurostar services started, the area beyond security is very unpleasant. It is a building site, with no visible progress for years now, and the duty free has only made it worse.

The main way I can see this improve is increasing the number of services continuing to the Netherlands and Germany, so there are more frequent services, but with fewer Brussels passengers joining each individual service, spreading the load. And they should finally complete the construction work!
