Changing trains in York

Hello Railforum people!

I am planning a trip to Robin Hood's Bay, Whitby etc and am catching a train to Scarborough via York.

I have booked a ticket for the 1404 York to Scarborough, but would really prefer to catch the 1304. However, I only have 7 minutes connection time and I know the recommended connection time is 8 minutes. If all is on time, do you think 7 minutes is at all doable? I will be coming from Preston to York.

@spud46. Welcome to the forum. Should just be do-able if the inbound train from Preston is running on time and, of course, if your tickets allow it, but it will mean using the stairs/subway to get across from the middle of the station to the side. Trains from Preston normally arrive at York (at that time of the day) on Platform 7. Trains from York to Scarborough will probably use Platform 2.

York isn't the worst station on the GB network to have to wait for 50 mins. Punctuality on the 1357 arrival into York hasn't been that good of recent, so I wouldn't bet the house on making the connection, but you never know!

yes, never usually punctual (unless you are running late!) but there is always the York Tap to wait in

@spud46. One further observation. If the 1357 Northern arrival is slightly late and you miss the unofficial 1404 connection at York onward to Scarborough and so have to take the 1504 instead (which likely as not will run on time), unfortunately you won't be eligible to claim 'Delay Repay'. You'll not have been delayed by an hour, you'll actually have arrived on time as per your given itinerary.

I made a connection in 5 minutes in January in York when the Saltburn service was delayed by 15 minutes to the Edinburgh LNER service from 9 to 5 just in the nick of time.

I'd think I could just about do it in 3 minutes without luggage, at that time of day (not too congested). Move right to the front of the incoming train as it approaches York to be close to the footbridge.

But if you like a good pint or two and don't mind it being a little pricey, the York Tap is well worth a visit and you can sit out on the platform right near platform 2, so the extra hour might be a bonus.

I would alight from the very front door.

Then use underpass at Northern end of platform 5; it's quiet and has fewer steps than the busy footbridge.

If you miss the train, visit York Tap

Ive made a number of sub 5 minute connections at York. If crossing the tracks is required, use the subway. Nobody knows it exists!
