Is this possible. Anytime day single Grantham to Nottingham £9, but Grantham to Lowdham (changing at Nottingham) is still £9. If after buying a ticket to Nottingham and starting my journey could I change it to Lowdham and not pay anything extra.

i am not sure if the guard on the train has to do this, they may do so at their discretion (usually EMT staff will be happy to help). Likewise a zero fare excess should be possible at Nottingham station.

Ask for an over-distance excess at the station before boarding (arrive at least 10 minutes early).

If this is unsuccessful approach the guard (don't wait for him/her to come to you).

If it was possible to excess the fare at the start of the journey, the Guard on the train (and any ticket office after the journey has commenced) should only offer a new ticket for the part of the journey not already covered, taking into account National Rail Conditions of Travel Condition 14.
