May the guard release and later lock the doors from different local doors? For example, on a slammer, could he open the doors, walk down closing them, and then dispatch the train from the other end? Or does he have to go back to where he started?

I've seen plenty of guards on various stock change doors.

Subject to any company dispatch procedure, then yes - it is possible to release doors at one local panel and reset at another.

Certainly on Sprinter and Pacer stock, the Door Key Switch selector needs to be switched off on the first panel after use before being set to on on the second panel. Leaving two switches set to on will cut out the controls and sound a warning buzzer.

I have been on a train where the gaurd has dispatched from the leading drivers door before re-joining him in the cab. This was during the dark days of Connex.

When I was a guard I used to do it regularly, as long as you can see all doors then you close them there isnt an issue.

I do this all the time, release in one coach but then notice a wheelchair on the platform, go and assist them and then despatch from whichever door is nearest.

On a HST, if the guard releases a limited number of doors on a short platform using SDO, depending on a number of factors they might have to go back to the original door to re-lock, as the panel is in "hold" mode.

Northern and Merseyrail currently enforce a policy of despatch from rear door only. Doors open can be from anywhere but close must be from the back.

Can the guard remove his/her key from the panel though?

Same thing on 450s and 444s, we frequently have crew changes at Fratton which is an SDO stop for 12 and 10 cars, when the doors are released you take your carefully take your key out and ensure the door control switch is still in the 'on' position and then the new guard takes over.

If that is the rule I haven't seen it enforced on the Airedale line.

Why is this often quoted as the rule for Northern when it simply isn't. The rule is any panel except the front cant be used for closing the doors. The front panel and any other can be used for releasing doors and closing in case of emergency (i.e you have 2 panels and the the back one doesnt work)

Are you a guard for Northern (west)?
Please note there are completely different rules on the east side.

Northern Guard east, we all have the same instructions but differentlocal management interpretations. As NorthernGuard alluded to in mentionning depending on stock type when they have class 323s they can despatch from middle as theres more than one DKS not at the front.

Also Pumbaa mentionned it as a complete Northern rule not a west side / east side difference

After the James St incident, that was the message that went out. If it's changed then it's changed. I'm sure we've all seen the classic examples of differing local management interpretation, both here and elsewhere...

In the first week or so after everyone (east side at least) presumed it meant from the back every time then another meassage came out saying anywhere bar the front, this probably came about as some conductors were making a point of doing the long walk at most stops and services being delayed as a result

Yes, the key can be removed in hold, although we have had problems with it not turning again after it is put back in. We don"t always have to leave it in hold, it depends on which door that side of the train was locked at previously.
