The two of us live outside the UK. We are visiting a friend in Doncaster on Wednesday 17 August and spending the night in a hotel there. We booked a flexible rate with the hotel and can cancel without cost.
The following day, Thursday 18 August, we are travelling on a LNER train to Leeds. Advance tickets, booked directly with LNER at a cost of £8 per ticket.
We will then take the Flyer bus to Leeds-Bradford airport and fly home that afternoon.
Due to the possible rail strike on 18 August, we are considering cancelling our hotel booking in Doncaster and instead travel by train to Leeds on evening of 17 August and book a hotel there. I have checked and we can get a good rate with the hotel in Leeds. The industrial dispute may be settled or it may not. But by the time that is known, the cost of a hotel room in Leeds will have gone up considerably.
I have looked at ''Change your ticket'' on the LNER website and the procedure appears to be to book and pay for new tickets and then apply for a refund of the original tickets. Is this the correct way to go about it?

Tickets now changed to 17 August at the same price. It was all very painless.
