Back in the late 1980s my father who was very fastidious and law abiding got a big telling off from a train guard for the following, which I still occasionally wonder about to this day.
He bought returns (for me and him with a family rail card, I was about 10 years old) from Bath Spa to Temple Meads, and returns from Temple Meads to Severn Beach. This was cheaper than returns from Bath Spa to Severn Beach. Arriving at Temple Meads we got directly on the waiting Severn Beach train. The guard said the tickets would only be valid if we broke our journey in Bristol and didn't get the next available train to Severn Beach. Was this correct, and is this still the case nowadays?
