Changing a virgin WC advance to EC advance

Good evening all,

I booked a virgin advance from Euston to Motherwell travelling on Monday 24th March on the 17:30 to glasgow. It was an advance, costing £76.50.

I appreciate that advances cannot be easily changed, but having rethought my travel plans it would be easier to get a train to Edinburgh instead. My question is, can I call up virgin and change it to an east coast advance, for travel on the 17:00 departure from Kings cross, for £84.75? (plus the tenner amendment fee obviously)

I have not collected the ticket yet, I opted to get it from London. Does not having the ticket to hand make a difference if I was to try and change it?

Unlike when you buy an off peak or anytime ticket, when you buy and advance ticket, all if the revenue goes to the Train Operating Company you are travelling with, in this case, Virgin trains. As a result of this, I'm fairly sure that you won't be able to change your ticket in the way that you would like.

If you wanted to travel buy on an earlier or later train, you would pay a £10 admin fee plus any difference in price if the service you now wanted to use was more expensive (you don't get a refund if it is cheaper however).

Could you buy a single from Motherwell to Edinburgh instead, allowing you to use your advance ticket and then travel to Edinburgh if that is where you now need to travel to?

No, you definitely can't- the origin, destination and TOC must stay the same if amended. You'll either have to travel to Motherwell and thence to Edinburgh on a new ticket, or ditch the Advance for a new London-Edinburgh ticket.

Thanks for the responses guys! It's no big issue, it's more to do with shortening the first leg of the journey to Edinburgh. Bathgate would be better because im meeting the Edinburgh - Euston sleeper on Sunday night and it would mean a quicker journey to Edinburgh that night, as I hadn't factored that there is no direct services from Carluke on Sunday evenings.
