Changes to routes

I was just thinking due to Coronavirus services are very limited, but wouldn‘t this be a good time to renew the routes and networks making large changes and then marketing a new network for when the lockdown is finished. what are others thought about this and what changes you would make in your local areas.

Companies will be planning something for when the lockdown is finished however I doubt any of them will be thinking of it as a new network, just a plan for an increase in frequencies. It's likely that social distancing will last until a vaccine is available (so next year) which may mean limited capacity on buses, and possibly advice not to use public transport. Even when 'normal' has returned it's likely that there will be a significant drop in peak traffic, both on public transport and in terms of rush hour traffic. I cant imagine anybody wanting to commit a marketing spend around a new network for quite a few months yet.

First have a number of changes that were planned to be effective 05-Apr-2020 which would have affected a number of routes in Bristol, B&NES, North Somerset and others: they have now been put on hold with no new effective date AFAIK at this time.

I was wondering about this aswell, What is going to happened once we finished lockdown? No way it will be business as usual until the schools go back, ( school buses are full and the tube then why not peak buses) Trouble is No company would want to make radical changes until we've had a decent level of rest, to see if there is any lasting effects.

However it would be a good times to get rid of any dead wood, or making changes to sharpen its pencils, to make the network more efficient.

School buses WERE full, it's quite possible that school bus capacity will have to be adjusted. Children may be less effected by it, however they can still spreed it so I cant see that schools will go back to operating in the same way they were (until a vaccine is available).

Whats with this Vaccine? I think it will all hinge of testing, if most people get this virus, and we test everyone it would speed up the process.

Transdev had a load of changes planned for Lancashire that were due to come into effect sometime around now, but they've been postponed indefinitely, rather than coming into effect once lockdown is lifted.

Makes sense to do it that way. Once things return back to normal people will have enough to worry about without having to get to grips with a new route route network.

Lothian had changes planned with many linked to the Tram works on Leith Walk, however some of the changes did in fact go ahead as planned, ie look at service no1, No6, Nox12, No69, with the last 3 all gone and never coming back.

Staff have probably been quite occupied coming up with different reduced and emergency timetables every couple of days that are then implemented at great speed, than looking at the regular network.

I can’t see any reason why you think coming out of lockdown straight into a new network with large changes would be helpful?

Definitely. Can you imagine coming back after 3 months of lockdown and then discovering the bus network had massively changed?

Stagecoach Cambridge had a planned recast of the Busway routes...now postponed until further notice.

Probably not the best idea at the moment. A lot of companies are changing services day by day to match demands at the moment which will need A lot of work to get ready.

I agree. We've no idea how things are going to work out even when Covid-19 is a nasty memory, but that's a long way off, and basic survival is what must be focussed on for now, as a person, a family, a company, or a nation.
